Should my hubby seek emergency treatment right now for diabetic ketoacidosis?
My hubby’s blood sugar is 380 right now. It’s been in the 200′s and 300′s for the last few months now.
For the first time today his breath has a strong odor. I know that the main symptom of ketoacidosis is a fruity smelling breath and it’s very strong all of a sudden a few minutes ago.
He’s noticed that today he’s been soo thirsty and constantly drinking bottles of water.
He had 2 glasses of Ovaltine today.
Also around the same time I looked at him and noticed he looks like he’s lost a few pounds and I’ve never thought that before. He’s over 350 pounds already.
I’m wondering should he just make an appt to see his doctor or should he go to the ER? thanks.
Call the doctors office and they can tell you if it’s an emergency or not. They may arrange to get him in quickly. Unless that Ovaltine was sugar free that was a bad move since his sugars are already high. Best of Luck.

I am having recurring numbness and pain in my fingers and toes. It can change from hour to hour and day to day. I have not been diagnosed with diabetes but I am worried that it could related to diabetes. Does anyone know if diabetic nueropathy can come and go so randomly. Im writing an essay about Diabetes (basically what it is, how it affects me) so wht shud it be? I would like a quote, proverb, question or sumthin like tht but cant think of any.
Also, Diabetes is known as the “Silent Killer”.
You could use your statistics. Like say “1 in 5 has diabetes. In theory, 4 people in this room could have diabetes”.
Do you yourself have diabetes? If you do you could say somethinf like “Finger pricks, insulin pumps, needles, dieting, measuring. These are all things that i live with. I am a diabetic.”
Or you could give a definition : “di-a-be-tes (d•bë’•tis) noun. Disease marked by excessive flow of sugar-urine due to failure of pancreas to produce insulin.
I would peraonally go with the deffinition because my english teachers always told me to use DDSC format for paragraphs: directions, deffinitions, support, connection/conclusion.
Sometimes when I measure my blood pressure (mercury type apparatus) I hear a couple of pulses on higher levels before the continuous high pulses start. For example ,there are two pulses on 150 then nothing and finally the pulses start at 130.What is the significance of this?

Need a contact to get lantus eithr low cost or gettg it provided, no insurance. pain in feet, need relief.?
My 19 year old son has type 1 diabetes and had not been taking his insulin. I got involved and started him on a two hour testing with a sliding scale of insulin based on sugar readings. He has been having horrible pain in his feet and legs and there seems to be no way to relieve the pain. They especially hurt when he walks and has been using crutches and a walker to help out. His ketones were off of the chart, since he has no insurance the doctor worked with me to get those down and now he is doing better, but his feet still hurt a lot and he is taking pain medications, but the doctor only wants him to take one every 5 to 6 hours so he really doesn’t get total relief. It’s very difficult to just stand by and not be able to help him get any relief. I know getting his sugars consistent in normal range will help, but we ned some ideas until it’s been long enough. He’s still running up a little high before 7am when his lantus is due.
Being a diabetic, your son is prone for foot problems as well as eye, and kidney. He may have pins and needles sensations or sharp pains in his feet, if his legs swell, that is an early indication of renal problems. You should make sure that he gets a BUN and Creatnine with 24 hr urine clearance. He also needs to see a Diabetic foot specialist. I don’t recommend you change his insulin without the consent of an M.D. as the physicians assistant says, although I believe she is qualified, but does not know his history. You don’t want his insulin to go too low in his sleep that sometimes cause comas. Some doctors office teceive free samples, and for those who need it they are willing to help out with the samples if they have it. 1 800 300 0978 is the number for Lantus, I am sure that they may be able to help you or send insulin to your physician so you can get some. They may send you forms to fill out to see if you qualify financially, have your doctor complete his portion and mail it off asap.

I am 28 and I have high blood pressure? How much can exercise and diet affect my blood pressure.?
Recently, I found out that I have high blood pressure (150/100).Varies day to day and hour to hour, but hovers around this number. I am a little scared about the consequence of having high blood pressure at this age. If I start eating right, and exercise daily and quit smoking could I lower my blood pressure down to 130/90 or somewhere thereabouts. Doctor says because of my age I should try these methods first, before medication. I am just curious if at this time it would be wise to request medication, this really worries me. Thank you in advance for your answers.
Yes it can.Your bottom number should be below 80.What is your cholesterol level? How much do you weigh? all of these factors in.Oatmeal(old fashioned where you have to cook it for 3 to 5 minutes) will reduce it fast.I dropped 40 points in my cholesterol count in 3 months by eating it every day.
I had a stoke(stress related) at 200/100 for a blood pressure count in 2005.Since then I have de-stressed and I eat better, of course I’m a lot older too.Do quit smoking and change your eating habits and you can conquer it.Good luck.

I’m 20 years old with hypertension. I was put on Atenolol on Saturday and my doctor told me to buy a digital blood pressure monitor and keep a log of my blood pressure. What I don’t understand is the pulse pressure….I thought it was the difference between the systolic and diastolic pressures. I took a reading and my blood pressure is 131/76(this is after atenolol) but it shows the pulse as 102. Shouldn’t my pulse be 55?
I’m on 50 mg Atenolol, just in case you needed it.
The pulse pressure is the difference between the systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom) blood pressure. Sounds like your monitor is counting your pulse which is the number of heart beats in one minute.
Has anyone here been diagnosed with LADA, Type 1.5 Diabetes?
What do you do to manage it?
I have been diagnosed with LADA. 2 yrs ago I was getting sick for no reason and went to ER. 48 yr old male, 5’8″, 170lbs. I was in diabetic ketoacidosis. Diagnosed as type 2 diabetic by my family doctor. Again and again I went into ketoacidosis from not enough insulin. I was in intensive care 3 times. Finally seen an endocrinologist and was diagnosed as type 1 or LADA. I have One injection of 24 hour insulin called Lantus. I also inject rapid acting insulin novolog 5 units at every meal. My pancreas has stopped producing insulin altogether. Since getting the correct diagnosis and correct medicine I haven’t been too sick in awhile. Hope this helps.

I’m a 22 year old male and in good physical condition (I think). I don’t check my BP regularly but from time to time I do and I get a systolic of around 120 but my diastolic is usually around the high 50′s or low 60′s.
Normal BP can run anywhere from 90/60 to 120/80. Just because your diastolic number is 57 is nothing to worry about. As long as you don’t have dizzy spells when you stand up or nausea or any other problems you are just fine. One reading can’t give you an accurate BP reading anyway. I would suggest you drink more water. Dehydration can cause lower BP. You are worrying needlessly.

My father has diabetes and takes his medication every day but doesn’t watch what he eats or check his sugars. He had a liver transplant in 2003 and shortly after developed diabetes which is common. His anti-rejection drugs are taxing on his liver as is the diabetes so it upsets me very much that he doesn’t take care of himself. He has received three different machines and strips to test his blood sugar but loses them all the time. My mother got him a machines and test strips from a woman who doesn’t need hers anymore at church this morning and when he tested his blood sugar it was 467! He said the machine must be wrong so I tested mine and it was 103 which is normal. I say he needs to go to the emergency room since his doctor is not around on a Sunday. I don’t think this should wait until tomorrow. What do you guys think? How dangerous is a blood sugar of 467?
Yes, that is a very high number!! He should probably go to the ER or his doctor.
He really does need to watch his food better. You and your mother need to keep only the foods in the house that are good for him. They are good for both of you also.
I feed everyone here at the ranch the foods that I can eat. If they want something else, they need to go elsewhere to get that junk and it is 50 miles to somewhere else!!
The steroids he is taking for antirejection have a bad effect on attempts to control glucose numbers!! It is really hard to balance these things.
His doctor is also remiss not to be having closer watch on these things.
But your dad will probably call you “Diabetes Police” and be really ticked. Until he loses some precious parts of himself, toes, foot, fingers, hand, eyes; he will not take any better care of himself. He is in the land of DeNile and doesn’t want to help himself. You can lead a horse to water, and you can argue for ever with alcoholic, but until these people want to take control, they won’t!! And most wind up in the dialysis unit at the hospital, sad and sorry!!!

ok my mom is a diabetic. I just noticed that on her test strips that they expire march 31, 2008.?
Will the test strips still work right or do i need new ones that are not expired. Would it make a differance if the strips are expired or not. We both took are sugar levels this morning and well they were a lil high. Would that be from having the strips expired?
I wouldn’t rely on the results from expired test strips. Get new ones. And call the company the strips were from and tell then and see if they can replace the expired ones for you. Sometimes they can do that .
If you were a bad-a$$$ biker playing pool in a bar, and a naked bodybuilder walked in and asked for your clothes, boots, and motorcycle, would you give it?
I personally would, given the fact that you’d have to be out of your freaking mind to walk into a biker bar naked. You’d know somethings obviously wrong with the dude, probably high on PCP, let alone theorize he’s a freaking android on a mission.
yes, after seeing a cigarette being burned into his chest and him not flinching, i would think fck this im out of here.

anyone know about non invasive blood glucose monitoring?
I saw an article in the news a few months ago about using the body’s radiation to measure blood glucose. Would be really helpfull to diabetes management to be able to check as often as I like.
Does anyone know how likely we are to seeing an end product? WOuld the pharmaceutical industry take it on as they would lose so much money from test strips?
I think your talking about a small device you put on your finger that could measure your sugar like oxygen level is measured. ( a red light)
im sure it exsists but they would lose so much money. they care more about that than increasing compliance and decreasing pain. the only other option are certain insulin pumps have a needle which stays under the skin for three days and can check sugar for you, but you obviously would have to be insulin dependent to qualify

In many ways, The pH Miracle is reminiscent of an earlier generation of diet books. Much of the focus is on an intestinal cleansing program, followed by a diet that is 70 to 80 percent vegetables, coupled with a tremendous selection of supplements that authors Robert and Shelley Young recommend to everyone, no matter what their age, gender, or state of health. The Youngs point their fingers at…
My mother in law has been battling cancer for 7 years. She had a staph infection in her leg and had surgery to clean out the infection. It went really well. She has also been having really low blood pressure. They are now giving her 2 units of blood to bring the blood pressure up. Is this normal. Her normal blood pressure is only 107/74. But her bp has dropped as low as 93/52. I actually think the bottom number went to the 40s once but can’t remember the top number at that time. Doc. said it was bad but not as bad as a normal person since her normal bp is much lower. Is it normal to give blood to lower bp?
A BP below 90/60 can be low BP if the person suffers from dizziness, faintness and actual fainting spells.

I’m asking because my dad (62) wants to drink Red Bull on fishing trips so he can stay awake all night. He is taking meds to reduce high blood pressure, and his pressure is currently normal.
I’m against him drinking it since I don’t know what kind of effects it might have on him.
He should talk to his dr. Red bull has the caffeine amount that can really increase heart rate.
You can call his drs. office and advise them of what he wants to do and ask them to info dr, better yet, ask your dad to do it to get the go ahead.
Some seniors cannot take it because of speeding their heart rate up, some can in limited amounts. Tell your dad why you are worried and ask him to call dr.
He is old enough to do what he wants, of course, but I do understand the worries. Talking to him about WHY may help him to talk to you more about his medical conditions.
By the way, he isn’t considered elderly he is considered a senior. Elderely in today’s society usually starts at 75 now.
Arguing with him isn’t going to change his mind if he decides to drink it. So good luck.

What can cause low blood pressure, low potassium and low iron levels in 21 weeks of pregnancy?
I did ask my doctor, he hospitalized me and couldn’t find the reason. I have to see him again next week. My god why do people find the need to answer just to be RUDE!
You are providing nutrition for you AND YOUR FETUS–you need your doctor to advise on adding to your daily diet. Suggestions on a public site are not going to be of any value. Pregnancy changes a woman’s body–that is not so hard to understand–you need to stay in touch with your doctor and note all of your changes as they occur. Do not add things to your diet that are not beneficial–do not guess at what forms of sugar and vitamins and minerals you MAY need. Every woman is different–a thousand pregnant women can have a thousand different changes as the pregnancy develops. Relax–Good luck to you.

Anyone else (diabetics) have severe numbness/tingling in only one foot?
I discovered I am diabetic (type 2) nearly 3 years ago after seeing my doctor about severe tingling and numbness in my left foot. We think we (luckily) caught the diabetes early, and I can control glucose levels well with pills and diet/exercise (lifestyle) changes. That said, the tingling and numbness has remaining at the same level over the last few years, not getting worse or better.
It is a bit puzzling (to me and my doctor) as diabetic neuropathy usually is distributed evenly between both feet and/or hands… and mine was and is still highly focused in one foot.
I’ve been to a neurologist on my doctor’s advice and after some testing, and two CAT scans, over a number of visits he confirms this neuropathy, but is at somewhat of a loss for a cause. His best guess is that an old injury may have led to this condition… as an aside, I did play football in college and did have a fairly severe ankle sprain on this foot .
I’m curious if anyone can relate?
Thanks
i have tingling, burning and numbness in my left foot mostly.it gets worse at night.no rest for the weary,i guess.i am type2 diabetic taking metformin pill in the evening at dinner.i take paquenil twice a day.i was told if i get sugar levels under control it would go away.NOT.suggestions please.i am very tired from not getting enough rest.thanks to all.

Do you believe animal testing is okay when used for medication and prescription drug tests?
this is a school project and i thought it would help to get some people’s opinions to share and use.
I don’t believe animal testing is ever ok. We are responsible for our own health problem so animals shouldn’t have to suffer because of the bad choices we make.
Humans seem to justify these actions with the belief that our lives are more important than theirs. The Nazis conducted numerous medical experiments on the Jews with a similar rational, since they were viewed as an inferior, insignificant race. The mentally handicapped and people with psychiatric disorders have also been subject to inhumane experiments in the past, since their lives were deemed irrelevant.
I wonder how people would feel if vets did human testing to come up with cures for animals?
I say spare the animals and conduct medical experiments on convicted pedophiles, murderers, and rapists instead.

hi, i am a new nurse and need some help on something hope you can help?
i just started working at home health. i have a pt that i was told needed wound care, she is diabetic. both lower legs were very edematous and red, she had lots of yellow crusty skin peeling off. she has a couple of stasis ulcer on her foot and shin that were not very deep and were like a white color with red edges. anyway i am confused because it looked like cellulitis but nobody at the office was concerned. this is like a chronic thing for her. is this just like stasis dermatis from poor circulation or is it cellulitis? shes not on antibiotics or anything, and the ulcers dont look infected.
Patients with severe venous stasis often have legs as you described. The redness is often inflammation, not infection.
In general, compression & elevation are key elements in treating stasis.

I’m starting a small at-home cookie business featuring 100-calorie or less cookies.
I am wondering what diabetics need / don’t need in the cookies.
Maybe you have a great 100-cal or less recipe to share?
How many grams of sugar can a diabetic have per cookie?
Do they need to be low-fat or low carb?
The lower the carb, the better. The fat-content shouldn’t matter to diabetics. Each diabetic is different, and each and every diabetic will probably give you a different number as to the carbs per cookie. For me? I’d probably only eat it if it were 10g of total carbs or less. And even then, infrequently.
Good luck to you. Try (and tweak) this VERY simple recipe for low-carb Peanut Butter cookies.
1 cup Splenda
1 cup Peanut Butter
1 large egg
Blend, Bake (350 ~12 minutes).
Mmm, very good and very low carb.
Also, consider subbing your normal flour for almond flour or soy flour.
