Here are a few good tips to remember when traveling with a portable concentrator. We suggest always making sure your batteries are charged. Do this the night before you leave. Most airlines want you to have extra batteries no matter how long your flight is. So make sure you have extra batteries with you. The Eclipse is the only FAA portable oxygen concentrator that has a continuous flow mode. So for those of you on continuous flow oxygen, this is your only choice. Even if you are on pulse but expect to sleep with the unit this is your best choice because it does both continuous and pulse. Battery life on the Sequal Eclipse is about 3 hours per battery depending on liter flow.

The o2 concentrator is very quiet, portable and maintenance-free since it has very few moving parts. There is another system that utilizes the molecular sieves to split air into its elements, which are then directed towards the commercial system that uses up the oxygen and discharges the other gases. This kind of process is absolutely opposite to the cryogenic separation of gases.

These kind of oxygen generator concentrators or oxygen conserver are used in commercial airlines also as they provide emergency oxygen to passengers from the pressure drop in the cabin though these are not used in the cockpit or for the cockpit crew. In case of decompression the panels are either opened automatically by the automatic pressure switch or by a manual switch. Pressing the switch releases the masks.

Once the passengers pull down the masks, they remove the retaining pins that trigger the oxygen production. In the core the oxidizer has Sodium Chlorate that is mixed with less than 5 percent Barium Peroxide and less than one percent of Potassium Perchlorate. Lead Styphnate and tetracene are mixed and they form the explosive in the percussion cup. The chemical reaction that occurs is exothermic and the temperature of the canister reaches well above 260 degree.

This process produces oxygen for about fifteen to twenty minutes. The diameter of the two-mask generator is usually 63 mm or 2.5 inches in diameter and it is 223 mm or 8.8 inches long whereas the diameter of the three-mask generator is 70 mm or 2.8 inches and the length is 250 mm or ten inches long.

Oxygen candle is a kind of oxygen machine that is cylindrical in shape and contains a mixture of sodium chlorate and iron powder. The mixture smolders when ignited at about 600 degree, give sodium chloride and iron oxide as by product, apart from 6.5 man-hours of oxygen per kilogram of the mixture. Release of oxygen takes place at a fixed rate.

The mixture can be stored as long as required, even for twenty years. The process that the reaction follows would be clinically called thermal decomposition. The heat that is produced is due to the burning of iron. A Nonin 9500 pulse oximeter is a medical device which fundamentally measures the arterial oxygen saturation of haemoglobin (Hb) of a patient.

The Nonin oximeter does this with a probe attached to the body where the blood flow is excellent for more concise results. The ideal spots are finger, toe or ear lobe which is then linked to a computerized unit. This method of measuring oxygen in blood is known as Pulse Oximetry.

How Does A Nonin Pulse Oximeter Work?

The Nonin pulse oximeter uses red and infrared light to detect oxygen in the patient’s blood stream. Infrared light would be absorbed more by hemoglobin which carries the oxygen, but red light will be allowed to pass through. On the other hand, red light would be absorbed more by hemoglobin without much oxygen but infrared light will be allowed to pass through.

Once the information is gathered and transmitted to the machine or device, the ratios of red to infrared light are calculated and compared to a model table to determine the results. A good reading usually ranges between 90 to 100 saturation.

Conventional And Newer Generation Of Pulse Oximeters

Conventional pulse oximeters have some disadvantages. Whenever there are movements or poor blood circulation, the accuracy of the readings will be affected. As a result, it makes it very difficult to make medical decisions.

An oximeter, or a pulse oximeter, is a medical device that measures the amount of oxygen in the blood.

 
A pulse oximeter has become an important monitoring tool in modern medicine. The oximeter is attached to a monitor so as to enable a direct reading of the patient’s oxygenation at all times. This is because timely recognition of low saturation conditions and emergency correction measures can prevent potentially devastating complications. Before the oximeter was invented, a series of complicated blood tests were needed.

Oximeter manufacturers have been rising to the occasion by continually improving on their products to reduce the margin of error and provide safer tools. Clinicians are thus provided with the most technologically advanced systems. Oximeters now come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and they serve a variety of uses, but the main aim of all oximeters is to monitor oxygen saturation readings.

Clinical motion by the patient and corresponding errors in reading accurate saturation levels pose a major challenge to manufacturers. Clinical motion may cause volatility, dashing of display, inaccuracy, and freezing of saturation readings. Studies reveal that among adults extending, rubbing, clenching and flexing are the most common motions. In infants, kicking, clenching and flexing are the most common motions. Clinical motions are irregular and are generally very short in duration.

Oximeters traditionally calculate saturation by measuring the difference in trough and peak of each plethysmographic waveform. Advanced digital signaling allows the modern hi-tech meters to make accurate readings that were otherwise impossible.

An oximeter usually measures the percent of normal. Normal ranges usually vary from 95 to 100 percent. The blood vessels expand and contract with the heartbeat, so the monitored signals bounce in time with the heartbeat. Modern oximeters can also clip onto the finger of a patient and determine the amounts of chemicals by using optical properties of light.

The way in which pulse oximetry works is interesting. Well oxygenated blood is bright red in color, while poorly oxygenated blood is darker, almost purple in tinge. Bright red blood will absorb more light. Oximeters can also distinguish between venous and arterial bloods.

Oximeters or blood-oxygen monitors are critical in emergency medicine and can be crucial for patients with cardiac or respiratory problems. Another interesting use of the meter is in non-pressurized airplanes where pilots operate above 10,000 feet, thus needing supplemental oxygen. Oximeters are routinely used in operating rooms and intensive care units as a part of their vital-sign monitoring.

They are also used in sleep labs and with overnight oximetry tests to determine nocturnal hypoxemia (drop in oxygen levels). Patients who need supplemental oxygen aids or any other type of non-invasive breathing aids are thus helped greatly.

Other than hospitals and labs, people who are dependent on supplemental oxygen find it useful to own an oximeter. Such people feel comfort and security in being able to monitor their own oxygen needs. When such people become extremely short of breath, they are able to understand processes that take place within them, and thus feel empowered. People use oximeters while exercising or exerting themselves, so they can monitor their oxygen levels continually.

Oxygen is a form of medication, and oxygen levels should not be adjusted without consulting a doctor first. It is good for patients to be proactive with their own health care, but one should not get obsessed with the readings and get over alarmed.
