I want to run a marathon. I am a type one diabetic and have gained a lot of weight since having to be inactive recovering from surgeries to remove tumors from my liver. My doctor has given me the go ahead to start. I weigh 220lbs 5’8. I want a program I can stick with. I need a plan. I have been eating very healthy (increased fruits and vegetable intake, lowered processed food intake, cut out fast food) I also enrolled in a nutrition class in college. I used to weigh 270lbs. I have a good start. I am an honors college student and I need something that lays out how many times and what to do each week, how to increase (how much and which exercise) I would like to combine resistance training and cardio. I am a major beginner! I would like to start walking before I start to try to run to get my weight down so as not to damage my joints. I want to tone and build muscle, loose fat. what would i need to do if a type 1 diabetic runs out of insulin?

my best friend is a type 1 diabetic and today during class she told me that she ran out of insulin. i asked her if she needed to go home and i would let the teacher know she had to leave. she said it was ok and she ended up staying in class and then got home and more insulin. but i was really worried and now i need to know what to do and be informed to know how to act in case its a real emergency and she needs medical attention. should i carry certain items like tabs or something. this has never happened before but i want to be prepared in case it happens again. idk i just want to be able to feel like i can help her when she needs it.

In this case running out of insulin isn’t a big deal cause she went home and got more. A real problem would be if she ran out of insulin and was without it for several days.

The first thing you should probably do before you “help” her is ask her if she wants help. As a type 1 diabetic, I would get annoyed very quickly if someone tried to “help” me with my diabetes.

One thing I think you should do (and I think it would be smart to do) is to be aware of the symptoms of low blood sugar. Google the symptoms, but also ask her what her symptoms are because not every diabetic has all the symptoms of low blood sugar when they have a low. Also know what to do in case she passes out from a low blood sugar (call 911, glucagon shot, etc. You could ask her about this too). By the way, don’t be worried about her possibly passing out from a low because it’s not very common. A diabetic can feel the symptoms of a low coming on before they test their blood sugar. I’ve been diabetic for 7 years and have never passed out and have treated all my lows by myself, so do not worry about that.

The tabs you are talking about are used to treat low blood sugars, and insulin lowers blood sugar.

How to make a simulator for pulse oximetry?

Hi everybody.. I’m doing a research focused on designing a robust wireless wearable pulse oximetry system for remote monitoring purposes. Actually, I’m still in the beginning and very confused.. So, I would like to ask for the assistance in case anyone has websites or forums for such researches. Moreover, I’m looking for pulse oximetry simulator or Photoplethysmograhy signal simulator. You could write your own program, maybe using Excel, as it can plot the results readily. Mathcad or a programming language like VB or C+++ can be used too.

I get the impression you are into electronics, so maybe this is another quick solution. You could use an analogue simulator for electronics circuits (PSPICE). You would use voltage or current analogues of the light sources and transmission path through the finger to provide signals. Thus a basic simulation would use DC voltage sources as the analogue of the light sources, and resistors for the transmission path, with oscilloscope probe as the detector. The resistors can be modulated by additional voltage sources (pulse generators). Thus the resistors would actually be transistors or FETs.

Alternatively use two separate differential amp circuits for the IR and red sources. A voltage source (for a light source) is on one input (+) and the loss of the path for that colour is a pulse generator from another voltage source on the other (-) input. The path loss is subtracted from the source in the output of the amplifier. This should actually be a multiplication for mathematical purity, so if you label the loss as dB and plot the result logarithmically (sum log of numbers to multiply). The output of the two amplifiers is the resulting signal that you analyse to get the Oxygen reading. You can make a sub circuit that uses the exact formula, or do the formula with op amps, multipliers, log amps, whatever it is. The pulse generators can be used as arbitrary waveform generators (from a file, to look like the real thing) or you may be happy with triangle waveforms.

The advantage of using SPICE is that I think you are trying to develop an electronics circuit that process the signal, at least until you get it in a microprocessor for mathematical analysis. Thus the simulation is alo part of your electronics design process.

I have a patient I take care of as a private duty nurse. She goes to dialysis 3 times a week.The Nurse practitioner in charge of her case has given her a RX of 2300mg of Sodium Bicarbonate daily. I have been a sleep clinician for about 20 years**yipes! and you simply need to see a physician or sleep physician (they are called Diplomats of the ABSM *American Board of Sleep Medicine) as soon as possible to get some treatment. The only Board certification for sleep medicine is Diplomat, ABSM which means they have passed rigorous examinations and training in sleep disorders medicine as well as their other specialty medical boards (Pulmonology, Neurology etc). They will offer you options for treatment that will GREATLY improve your life. Once treated, you will be amazed at the changes you see in your daily life functioning levels. The tiredness goes away, you will lose weight, you will be able to sit in meetings without sleeping but it takes treatment.
The longer you have sleep apnea, the more damage it does to how you feel daily. Treatment options vary greatly but NCPAP *Nasal Continuous Positive Airway pressure* is one of the preferred methods for effecting treating sleep apnea. Its a small mask that you wear at night that provides an airway splint with air being pushed through nasal passages. Patients I have treated with it tell me that once they start it their lives are miraculously changed overnight. If that is the treatment your doctor suggests you should wear it every time you sleep (even when napping) and even take it with you for your occasion business or vacation trips.
If you get nasal stuffiness, simply call your physician and ask for a nasal steroid (nasal spray) that will alleviate the problem. Should you have other options research them carefully before opting for surgery. In many cases, nasal polyps or deviated septum require surgery (but NCPAP) can be used before and after this to assure you continue to feel better. There are some surgeries however, that have very low success rates and create whats called “silent snoring”. That means you are still having apnea without all the sounds which can be dangerous as it doesn’t alert you to arouse yourself during a period of sleep apnea which would terminate the apnea. Snoring with sleep apnea are alerts to the brain to arouse you to stop the sleep apnea episode.
I can reassure you if you get treatment, you WILL feel better. I know this a very difficult time in your life and very hard to deal with daily. You WILL get better with treatment and you WILL have so much improvement you will feel like a miracle has occurred.

Why do blood glucose test strips require coding?

Many blood glucose testing strips require that a code be entered into the meter that is indicated on the test strip container. I have no idea why this is required. Plus, what makes such a tiny piece of plastic worth $1 a strip?!

The strips work based on an enzymatic reaction between the chemicals on the strip and the glucose content of the sample. For any particular batch of the enzyme coating they put on a strip, the reaction to a specific amount of glucose can be slightly different than for some other batch.

The coding number that is provides on the vial adjusts the meter’s response so that it will give the same value (more or less) for the same amount of glucose in the blood despite the different reactivities of the enzymes on the particular strip.

As for the $1 per strip – I think it is absurd that they cost that much, but many strips do cost about that if you have to buy them without any insurance coverage.

Has anybody here ever done an extended water-only fast?

For health reasons, I’m thinking about trying a water-only fast, perhaps anywhere from 10 to 30 days in length. I am a 63-year-old male, 5’9″ 250 pounds, with high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes (pills, not insulin), high fasting blood sugar, and low HDL, and a history of a mild stroke in 2003. My health care professionals all advise me to NOT do a fast. Thirty years ago, when I was much younger and healthier, I did fast for 10 days and lost 25 pounds, and I felt great all during the fast … at least until I ended the fast with a big greasy cheeseburger (big mistake). Anyway, it seems that there is quite a difference between mainstream medical advice and actual research studies. When someone urinates a lot and is super thirsty due to undiagnosed diabetes it is because they have ketoacidosis. You can test for this by purchasing ketone reagent strips at your local pharmacy. You do not need a prescription. Pee on the strip. If it changes colors, you need to call your doc immediately!! If it does not change colors, then diabetes is probably not your problem.

It is so strange to me that soooo many people post “Do I have diabetes?” questions here every day (nearly all teenage girls!). Honestly, if you think you have a horrible chronic illness then you see your doctor – you don’t poll strangers.

my son in hospital and seems like i can not stop eating and I am bored to much.?

my nerves are shot and i am a diabetic and well I have been on computer wrote letters played games and even watching American Idol and still I feel bored to death got any ideas I can do to help me stop eating and feeling so blue? oh my son had a seizure last thursday and his organs shut down and it been a long week. he is doing good now. just wondering how to stop my nerves being so bad. got any help let me hear it. thanks!

Do some word puzzles in a book instead of on your phone or computer. Sometimes you just need to get away from electronics. Try to meditate. Sit quietly and comfortably, lay your hands out on your legs, close your eyes, be sure it is quiet. Try to not think about anything but your breathing. Stay like this for at least 10 minutes a day. Increase your time as the days go by. Or you could do it more than once a day if you want. That should help you relax. Only eat fresh vegetables and fruit for snacks.
