I was trying to make a diabetic-friendly version of a strawberry bread recipe, and substituted the sugar for Splenda. Now I’m noticing that my batter is far thicker than before.
Do I add more vegetable oil, or is there some other way out?
Well you don’t use cup for cup when subbing sugar for splenda.
Use half
if the recipe calls for 1 C sugar you use 1/2 C splenda – it’s sweeter than sugar.

High Blood pressure only in the Doctors office?
Okay so here is my question I have a serious problem which surfaced last pregnancy and is doing so again this pregnancy. My blood pressure is currently stable at 118/72 but every time I got to the Drs office (OB) my BP is at 141 or higher over 80 I think it is nerves and I do have anxiety issues. Last pregnacy I was having non stress tests towards the end and the hospital was saying after being there for 20 minutes that my bp and pulse would return to normal and that I might have mild hypertension at the most and after delivery my BP dropped to 90/55 and I passed out which surprised them. Has anyone experienced this and what can I do to help it? I am very concerned that this is a trend and I own a business and can’t afford to be put on bed rest unneccessarily. No sales = No $.

It’s definitely better than a high-carb diet. I personally didn’t do too well on Atkins because I apparently need some carbs to stimulate my pancreas to produce insulin. What I found better was low-glycemic eating meaning complex carbohydrates paired with protein.
But low-carb recipes would definitely be handy for a diabetic. Everyone’s just a little bit different and the important thing is to avoid white carbs until he gets his sugars sorted out.

Tips and tricks for a long road trip with diabetes?
So I am going on a road trip west to see the Redwoods in California. I am going from mid-June to mid-July. I’m planning on hiking in as many national parks as possible and maybe looking at real estate in Oregon.
I have Type 1 diabetes, and I wanted to see if any of you have any suggestions. I know all the basics, take what you need and extra just in case, keep a prescription handy in case you need a refill, keep the insulin in a cooler, snacks in every bag and the car.
The kind of stuff I mean is I know a guy who takes a coffee thermos, fills it halfway with ice, and then sticks his insulin in wrapped in paper towels and a ziplock, to take up the mountain for two days. Anything you would learn from having this experience before.
Also if you can think of any specific place or activity I should look for when I get there.

So I’m 29 weeks and was informed that I failed my first Gestational Diabetes test (the one where you don’t have to fast). My level was 139. How can I stop snoring at night?
I feel like I cant breathe out of my nose right alot of the time so I bought some Breathe Right strips. They help me feel like I can breathe better but I still sleep with my mouth open. I snore no matter what position Im in or any adjustments to pillows but I mainly only snore at my boyfriends house. Im pretty sure I dont have sleep apnea because I dont stop breathing. You need to find out WHY you’re snoring first, before you can fix it. A lot of different things cause snoring. (sleep apnea isn’t one of them- it’s only a symptom that accompanies it). Do you have large tonsils? Sinus problems? Severe allergies? You can go to the Dr. to get any of these diagnosed really easily. You can try things like Flonase which is a steroid nasal spray if the problems lies in your nasal passages. (especially if it’s mostly at a different house- my first thought would be an allergy problem). But figuring out the cause is the best way to find the cure.

Is there a natural treatment for diabetic nerve pain?
My husband has diabetes and he’s been experiencing pain and burning in his legs. The pain is debilitating at times. He’s told his doctor, but the ultrasound shows that his circulation is in the normal range.
Would too much sugar in his diet trigger the pain, or is this a cumulative effect of too much sugar too long? (He just told me he’s been eating bags of jelly beans at work when he gets stressed. It’s not enough that his blood sugar levels are spiking and his A1C’s are good – 5.6 to 5.9.)

Where can I find a doctor that supports a low carb/high fat diet approach to controlling type 1 diabetes?
I am a type 1 diabetic living in Houston, Texas who is looking for a doctor who would support a low carbohydrate/high fat approach to control my blood sugars. I have made large improvements using this approach/way of eating but I need a doctor who would support this approach. Does anybody know of any doctors in Houston that are supportive of this approach?

Many doctors are very ignorant about low carb. I wouldn’t let that stop me. I just don’t discuss diet with the doctor – I go with what works for me, and that is clearly low carb.

When you’re taking blood pressure readings, and the top number is suddenly very low?
what exactly does it mean? I’m using a wrist meter, and I know they’re not thje most accurate, bot the top number keeps decreasing. I’m getting 101 and less, when I’m used to getting 150 +.
How safe or dangerous is all this? I know the third number is pulse rate, but could someone please explain the top two numbers,v and what it means when the tops number falls dramatically?

Its not the numbers that matter, its the fraction that counts. Its basically an indication of how alive you are. So a BP of 150 over 150 means that you are in perfect health whereas a BP of 75 over 150 means you are half dead.

Okay i’ve been taking Lyrica for a couple fo years now and it works for the pain in my feet. I’m a diabetic and suffer from Neuphathy and the medication has help a lot. Now I was in a car accident about 1yr and half ago and now I have chronic pain in my legs and back so now i’m taking 600mg a day to help with the pain. Now i’m gaining so much weight, my stomach is always swollen, sometimes diarrhea lol and sore burps. This medication has too many side effects and i’m always tired. My dog has diabetes and is very ill ???please help?
my dog ran out of insulin for 2 days and his vet was out of town to auth a refill, he started getting sick the 1st they he didn’t have it by the 2nd dy he was not eating, vomiting and just laying down very sad.. we took him to the vet and dr advised he had keystones which was not good, we could afford to hospitalize him, so they sent us home with meds and also fluids to put under the skin more like IV .. we took him back the next day and stated he was really sick, they sent us to another dr and she explained what was going on, we dont have the funds to hospitalize him, but she checked his sugar and he was in the 300′s she stated to start him back on insulin and to force fed him and continue the treatment with the iv and meds.. any one know what else we can do to help him get better …PLS HELP… HE IS OUR BABY and unfortunately we don’t have the funds to keep him in the hospital..
I think your best bet would be to have him put to sleep. I know it’s a horrible thing to suggest, but since you do not have the funds to keep his meds up, and the fact that your dog is probably in a lot of pain, that is what I would do if I were in your place. I know he is your baby, so you’ve got to do what is best for him.

What specific foods are beneficial to someone “borderline diabetic”?
I don’t need recipes or cook book recommendations. Just lists of specific vegetables that are beneficial, specific fruits, specific grains, specific dairy products. And vice versa, which ones should be avoided? My mom got dubbed this term today.
So far I see that potatoes are not recommended, neither is white bread and carrots. And for recommended I have broccoli, squash, sweet potatoes (really?), tomatoes, squash. Protein I have chicken and fish. … Anything else? Diabetics I would love to hear your responses.
Saying ‘borderline diabetic’ is like saying ‘partially pregnant’.
It means the person has impaired glucose tolerance and a problem metabolizing carbohydrates.
The best food for someone with such problems is a low carbohydrate diet.
You are right that potatoes are not recommended. Neither is bread of any sort, grains of any sort, rice of any sort, noodles, pasta or corn. All starches turn into sugar in the blood and spike blood sugar. There is little difference between ‘refined’ and ‘wholegrain’ in a person with impaired glucose tolerance. Wholegrain bread will spike blood sugar as much as white bread.
In practical terms it means meat+veggies. So for example if the family was having roast chicken, a good choice for the person with impaired glucose tolerance is a normal serving of chicken, and all the non-starchy vegetables that they like, e.g. zucchini, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus. Absolutely no bread or potatoes.

Yes age can have a factor on BP but unless you’re over 50 or under 22 there’s no real affect from age.
There’s a lot of factors that can alter your BP, but generally if your resting BP is over 150/90 it is considered high. Low is something like 105/50 depending on your source of info.
Chances are you have nothing to worry about, kristy has a point about it being something the media tries to use to scare people.

4. note pressure on korotokoff. listen to systolic and diastolic
5. take blood pressure 2 more times, record results

It detects movement in the crib. Breathing = movement. But you have to remember to keep anything that would create movement artificially away from the crib. That means no mobile, no fan blowing directly on the crib (not like you would anyway), and no toys that create vibrations. If your baby stops breathing, there is no movement, and the alarm would sound off. But if something like a mobile is moving and preventing the sensor from picking up this lack of baby movement…
We have one and love it. We have a very small house and we both never really felt comfortable having our daughter sleep in our bed with us. We literally did not have the room next to the bed for a bassinet, so she was in her crib from day 1.
You can set your parent’s unit to continuously monitor the noises in the room, like a regular monitor, or you can set it to only pick up noises like coughs, rolling around, and cries. This was huge for me, because with a regular monitor, I wasn’t ever getting any sleep. I was listening for noises which weren’t there, and the constant static would drive me crazy (static is non-existent with this).
As far as the movement part of it, we never had a false alarm. The only times the monitor ever went off was when we took our baby out of the crib without shutting the nursery unit off first. There is a setting on your parent’s unit that you can turn on or off, whatever you prefer…it’s a rhythmic “tick” sound. As long as it ticks, it indicates that the movement sensor is working. Or if you’re like us, you can turn it off and just test it once a day. My daughter is healthy, but it gave me extra piece of mind knowing that we had it. No, it doesn’t *prevent* SIDS, but it helps to keep you in check with your baby. If we didn’t have this monitor, I’d be going in her room while she was sleeping all the time and putting my hand on her chest to make sure she was breathing. As a new mom, I was completely petrified of everything.
Another great feature I loved is that it detects and displays in digital format the temperature in your baby’s room on your parent’s unit. You can set it to sound off an alarm if the temperature in the nursery drops too low or kicks up too high, at temps specified by you.
The parent’s unit is cordless and rechargeable, and the charge lasts a full day and night, and probably longer, but we’ve never let it go that long.
My daughter is 14.5 months and we still use the unit as a sound monitor only. After trying all kinds of monitors, even as a sound monitor I would have spent the extra money for it.
To me, the cost of the monitor is pennies to give you that extra piece of mind.

Resting heart rate too low?
Had an echo this summer, it was good. I am 25 male. Have slightly high blood pressure. Most of the time its actually perfect, but sometimes can get to 140 150.
Anyways, I have been exercising everyday fro the last 2 months 45mins a day, high intensity. I was a HS track starr, but got out of shape and smoked and what not after that. I did quit smoking last year.
Anyways I feel Like I am in better shape than 90% of people.
My heart rate when I am at work, sitting on the computer sometimes is like 50-55 during the day. When I move of course it goes up.
Is teh 50-55 too low? or ok
I had a 48 hour holter monitor 3 months ago, and it showed my hr at night went down to 38. Average over that 48 period was 65. but nothing out of the normal. I had like one couplet, and a couple missed beats but they were not at all concerned.
So is 50-55 when working on a computer ok, or not?
