Serious injury from blood pressure cuff?

While spending a day in the hospital attached to an automatic blood pressure cuff going off every 15 minutes (agonizingly!!) I was left with a black and blue arm like I have never seen. All day long when I complained that the cuff was too tight, the nurses looked at me like I was some kind of whiney wimp. When the cuff came off those nurses were gone and the volunteer who was putting equipment away had nothing to say but, “Wow.”
Ever since then I have had mild pain in my upper arm, like the feeling of hitting a bruised spot again and again. Over the last month, the pain in that muscle has increased and has become accompanied by pain in my shoulder, very deep but not in the bones I don’t think. Sometimes it radiates down into my elbow and almost to my wrist. Sounds like rotator cuff stuff to me. My question is whether or not it could have been caused by the blood pressure cuff that brought me to my knees in pain all day that day in January.

The same thing happened to me. Most of my pain was under my arm. I got tire of telling them because every time they fixed the cuff it got worse. It could be a pinched nerve but you need to tell your doctor. A month is a long time , I would not wait any longer.

I can’t answer that but I have the one from Walgreen’s their brand and i like it ok but anytime you test your sugar sucks because of having to use the lancet but i have no trouble with the meter at all. It works great. I think its the fact of what strips they require and the cost is where the expense is.

Littmann stethescope -which is better?

i’m buying a new littmann steth…so can u pls tell me which one of the foll 2 is better to buy..CLASSIC 2 OR MASTER CLASSIC 2??? I’m doin Mbbs now…pls ans and guide me…..

I had a classic II when I was younger- it is a double sided stethoscope, so you have a bell and a diaphragm. The master classic II only has the diaphragm.

The bell is useful for low frequency sounds, and is more traditional. However, both the classic II and the master classic II have a tunable diaphragm that lets you listen to BOTH high AND low frequency sounds by adjusting the pressure.

I think more people have the classic II, but this is probably because it is cheaper. It also allows to you to use the traditional bell.

which is better? accu chek active or accu chek aviva?

I am buying this for somebody, I don’t know the ABCD of diabetes meters. Please help.

The Aviva is better – it is smaller, straight forward to use and can tell you average readings from the last sets of tests i.e monthly average, weekly average etc. it can also be linked to the computer to download the information via the screen on its front (although the active does this too – and you need the soft ware!). The kit can be given to you by your diabetic clinic, or by contacting the company directly. Both meters have replacement batteries provided for free on request by the company too.
We had about 3 of the active meters, but once we got the Aviva my daughter stopped using the active ones and just stuck to the Aviva. This compnay also do a large screen meter with large buttons for the older person if this is required.

Question about Disneyland and Diabetes?

Almost everyone in my family is diabetic so it was kind of inevitable i would end up diabetic. I eat very healthy and exercise all the time! In a week we will be in Disneyland for 7 days. I am worried that they wont have food choices for people like me. I have thought about taking lunches there, but it’s a 10 hour drive from here to Anaheim and considering we will be there for seven days I’m not sure how well that would work. So my questions are:

Does the amount of sleep someone gets, affect blood pressure?

I have an odd sleeping pattern during the summer. Since I’m 17, I stay up late until 5 or 6 AM, then wake up the next day at 3, eat, then hang out with friends or something, come back inside, get online then for the remainder of the night.
My mom complains and says its bad for me though, I usually always gets at least 6 hours of sleep. Too much sleep is bad too, I’m guessing?

I want to bring them on-board just in case my luggage gets lost, can I do this?

You’ll need a doctor’s note to allow you to carry needles and insulin. You’ll only be allowed enough for the actual journey (but most TSA won’t know how much you need….so take as much as you reasonably could say is necessary, allowing for accidents like dropping a needle etc.)

Shampoo and other liquids = 3oz bottles or smaller, everything must fit in a clear quart size resealable bag. Anything that can be poured, smeared, rubbed in etc counts as a liquid – so face powder, hair wax, lipstick are all “liquids”

Sugar Free Blueberry Pie

1 Recipe pastry crust
4 c Blueberries
– fresh or frozen, thawed 4 ts Sweet and Low
1/4 ts Cinnamon
1/8 ts Nutmeg
1 tb Lemon juice
2 tb Quick tapioca
8 dr -OR up to…
10 dr Liquid butter flavoring.

LIne 10″ pie plate with crust Pick over, wash and drain berries. Mix next 6 ingredients together in small bowl Toss with berries being careful to not crush the berries too much pour berries in crust, making sure all the “goodies” are scraped from the bowl. Cover with top crust, slit for steam to escape. Bake at 425 for 10 minutes, reduce heat to 325 for 45 minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly. For a little added flavor to the crust you can sprinkle with a light mixture of Sweet and Low and cinnamon. Cool on wire rack, serve with dollop of Lite Cool Whip or small scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired. Exchanges, Pie only – 1/8 pie equals 1 fruit, 1 1/2 starch, 1 1/2 fat I usually put a large piece of foil or a cookie sheet under the pie to assure that no juices escape into the oven.

1 Uncooked double pie crust
Sweet and low, if desired

Diabetic Type II, Female, Drinks?

I have had diabetes, type II, for 4 years, I’m on oral medication, I watch my carb intake & my A1C is 6.0 & has been under control for 3+ years. I do not drink alcoholic beverages for the fact it is not recommended for diabetics. However, I would like to have a couple of drinks with family & friends in a couple weeks for my college graduation party. I was thinking vodka & diet pepsi; maybe two drinks at the most & planned on taking my meter with me to keep check of my glucose level & keep a healthy snack in my purse. What do you recommend as far as drinks? Could this be possible or should I just avoid trying any drink?

Vodka and diet coke is not bad. Some mixed drinks have a lot of sugar in them, or fruit juice, or other bad stuff. With vodka, it’s just the alcohol. A shot of vodka, or even two, shouldn’t affect your BGs that much.

Since you have a meter and apparently you’re practicing pretty good control, check yourself a couple of hours after drinking two vodka & cokes, and see how they affect you. I would guess probably not that much.

Besides that, you can just break all the rules every so often and if you control your blood glucose after that, it doesn’t affect you so much. My Dr. said I could eat desserts at weddings, and on my birthday (only -my- birthday), so long as I was really good for the next couple of days. This is sort of a ‘special occasion’ thing. And what’s more of a special occasion than your college graduation party?

Type 1 diabetes is when the pancreas makes little to no insulin. This person must take up to 6 injections of insulin each day. The pancreas may have been attacked by a virus at some point and damaged it. This is just a theory, they don’t know for sure why the pancreas stops making insulin. Type 1 can be diagnosed anywhere from birth all the way to about the age of 35.
Type 2 diabetes many times starts out with the person being insulin resistant. This is when the pancreas is making lots of insulin, but the body does not use it correctly. In some cases, the pancreas actually makes too much insulin and the body just does not know what to do with it all. Type 2 is usually treated with oral medications, insulin, or both. About 11% of those with type 2 can control their disease with diet and exercise for many years, but in time, later in life, the pancreas becomes tired and worn out, and no longer can do its job, and the person must now take some kind of medication to control it. Type 2 is normally diagnosed from around the age of 40 and up, although, it is not uncommon for it to be diagnosed at earlier ages. Both types of diabetics must watch their diets and limit the amount of carbs they eat and get some daily exercise. There is no cure for either kind of diabetes except a pancreas transplant. Regardless of what people think, type 2 cannot be cured any more than type 1. Although some type 2 diabetics can control with diet and exercise, it is not a cure, and is not reversed….only controlled. Eating too much sugar, or junk food, and not being active enough does NOT cause diabetes. It is a problem with the pancreas and how the body uses insulin. Most type 2 diabetics (62%) are not, or ever have been overweight. Undiagnosed type 2 diabetes itself, can cause some weight gain in those that are insulin resistant. Both types of diabetes are many times genetic, especially type 2. If one or more of your parents have diabetes, you are in a high risk category.
In the U.S. there are 120 million men, and 11.5 million women with diabetes. Of these 5 to 10% have type 1 and 90 to 95% have type 2.
Approximately 186,300 people under the age of 20 have type 1 and 2 diabetes. (U.S)

I am a Type 1 Diabetic and an athlete, therefore I NEVER wear my medic alert bracelet which is VERY dangerous. I was thinking about getting the Medic Alert sign with the words Insulin Dependent Diabetic underneath. Not a good idea. Tattoos will be ignored since they are not a standard medical alert. As a diabetic, you should also consult with your physician before getting any tattoo. An infection could cost you a lot more than the tattoo.

Insulin? Carbs? What’s Too Much?

I Live in the United Kingdom, and i have to say, i havn’t been that well educated about carbs in my diet. I havn’t been having a very good time with my diabetes lately, and have never been told about Carbs and Insulin to be honest. But this afternoon, i was looking at the amount of carbs on the packet from the noodles i was eating, and it said 64g of Carbohydrate, and i like spat it out. But, then i thought is this a high amount of carbs or not? It did seem like it to me, but because i have never been tought about controlling diabetes on carbs, i had no idea.
In a couple of weeks, i have been invited to an education meeting at the hospital called CARB COUNTING AND INSULIN ADJUSTING with other kids, but i would like to have some idea about Carbs and Insulin before i go. Please could someone give me a vauge idea about this and how many carbs consumed is too much?

This is a difficult question to answer here but I’ll try. I have been Diabetic over 22 years ( Diagnosed at 13 ) and have always had to count carbs and adjust insulin. Basically you will be given a starting point of 1 or 2 units per point ( 1 point is 10g) of carbohydrate. You have to work out how many grams of carbohydrate there is in your meal and give the insulin to match. For example a meal of sausage beans and chips you will have carbs to count in all three items, depending on amount, small sausages = 10g each (say 2 ) beans may be say 20g and say for example 40g of chips, you would add this up, in the eg that would be 80g which is 8 points times by 2 units per point so that would be 16 units. Some foods don’t have carbs in like plain meat, eggs, green veg etc. You will have to work with your Diabetes nurse to get the correct balance but it is worth it as it gives you much more freedom in your day to day life. If you have something like noodles in a packet you can work it out from the side of the packet eg 64 g would be 6 1/2 points = 13 units.

This is my favorite. I like it because 1 – the ingredients are easy to find, 2 – the dessert is low in carbohydrates/sugar, 3 – it’s VERY easy to make, and 4 – the taste is amazing.

I use 85% Lindt because I prefer dark chocolate and the carbohydrate difference is significant. I usually bake this in silicone bakeware because the pieces pop out so nicely.

Lindt is sold at most stores. I can always find it at Target, Wal-Mart, Safeway/Dominick’s, and Walgreens. You’ll need about two bars.

It’s difficult for some people to find almond flour. You can grind plain almonds yourself in a blender or food processor, but I usually buy it from Trade Joe’s or Whole Foods. Basically every store sells sugar-free jellies, so that should be easy to get.
