Explain why accumulation of glucose within the lens results in the uptake of water.?
I’ve been given some past paper questions to help me revise for my human biology exam, but I’m stuck on this question and cannot find the mark scheme anywhere! Please can somebody help me?!
If insulin does not work efficiently, diabetes mellitus may develop. One of the early symptoms of this disease is a blurring of vision caused by a build up of glucose in the lens of the eye, which is accompanied by the uptake of water. This distorts the shape of the lens.
Explain why accumulation of glucose within the lens results in the uptake of water. [3 marks]
The presence of the glucose will lower the water potential of the lens and so water will enter by osmosis since it moves from high to low water potential.

Can you also use a spermicide foam with your diaphragm…..?
I have been using the spermicide jelly in the diaphragm and around the rim but I also want to use a spermicide foam as another back up. The box for the foam says safe to use with condoms. I know the diaphragm is made of dry rubber and latex.
In the old days before there were gel spermicides, foam was the method of delivery for diaphragms.
It should be fine, but frankly I’d just use more gel than use a secondary spermicide, OR switch to the foam only. More spermicide isn’t necessarily going to work better, it’s just going to make a bigger mess and possibly cause a chemical reaction between the two spermicides (and believe me that is NOT someplace you want a chemical reaction happening!).

How can I pass urine test for cannabis/weed/pot/marijuana; what has worked for you?
I have been smoking it often for over a year. Please don’t tell me I shouldn’t, I already have and I have my reasons, I’m beyond that now. I have a perfect job offer on the table and I need to pass a urine test. I know flushing with liquids alone will not work as it is stored in the fat cells.
I may possibly have a week before I am tested.
What can I take to pass this test?
Your recommendations are very much appreciated.
Stop smoking now! Delay as long as possible without making them suspicious.
Day before you go, drink about 2 gallons of water in about 3 hours. Pee constantly. Then, right before you go in you drink another few glasses. Pee a bit into the toilet, then the cup, then the toilet again. The most concentrated samples come from the beginning and ending parts of the urine stream, you don’t want those in a cup.
Your urine will be clear when you pee, but the temp on the cup will be body temp. Because of the extreme diltuion, the urine will not have enough THC to be positive.
My husband was a truck driver and used this method on every DOT or employment pre test and never had a positive.
The trick here is that your urine still contains THC, but because of the dilution, the levels are below the levels of a positive.
BTW, THC shows on a blood test for approx. 3 days. It shows in a urine test for up to two weeks and in a hair test, for up to 5 years. The better tests mentioned in a lower post are very expensive and no one uses them. Even the Army drug test is only accurate up to 3 weeks for THC use. Scary, huh?

Why do I always laugh at the most inappropriate times?!!!?
like for example me and my friend (a girl- a really goodloooking girl) were fighting and somewhere along the way i asked her why she always jokes about finding her ‘hubby.’ Like we’d be walking around campus and shes like mannn i just wanna find ma husband! But anyways she starts crying uncontrollably and i ask her whats wrong and she tells me her Dad isnt going to live much longer cuz he has diabetes and he can hardly walk, he falls asleep while talking, he cant drive cuz he might fall asleep behind the wheel etc. And she was like i just want him to see his daughter get married before he dies. Deep shit right? Well, as much as i didnt want to i couldnt stop laughing!! like not like a uncontrollable laugh but like i was still laughing and it was hard for me to talk to her. I really didnt know what to do! i was like ahhh stop crying! here, heres a picture of a cute kitten! etc
wtf is wrong with me?! this happens to me all the time and frankly i find it messed up!
Not sure, but this happens to me too sometimes… It`s rare for me, but it still happens occasionally
When you start laughing, cover your mouth so that the person can`t see the smile in it and try to make your laugh a little bit different depending on how you already do it. Cause you do know that people often mistake cries for laughs right? Well it can go as mistaking laughs for cries too
I am an 18 year old girl (19 in May) and I would like to know whether I have low blood pressure or if my blood pressure is naturally low. Generally whenever I measure it or have it measured- using the digital cuff- it is between 80/43 and 95/50 while my pulse rate is about 70-80 per minute. I don’t really have symptoms of low blood pressure, though I do sometimes feel dizzy and light headed even though I always have sufficient calories (1500-1800). I also often have mild headaches (probably due to the heat?)
If it makes any difference, I am kind of tall 5’7″ and live in a hot place (30 degrees celsius upwards).
I don’t really want to go the doctor t have it checked out because I think I am most probably okay and I don’t want him to think I am a hypochondriac or something. . . So any help will be really appreciated. Thanks
that pressure is fine, if you really had low blood pressure you would faint

My blood pressure is usually on the lower side (not extremely low), usually aroun 103/78 I think was the last reading I got…but with a pulse rate of 142. I know that wasn’t a freak thing because I’ve been told I have a fast pulse rate before. Is that a bad thing? I’ve been getting a lot of headaches lately. I’m 125lbs and like 5’4 and 1/2. I just don’t know if I should talk to my doctor more about this? Also during an ekg my heart apparently seemingly “stopped” to the nurse that ran the test. She said one screen showed that my heart looked to have almost stopped beating. But she never ran a second one (I know…wtf right? I guess she didn’t think anything of it?) Any clues as to what’s ailing me?
It’s possible that you just have tachycardia (heart rate/pulse over 100 beats per minute). Blood pressure isn’t really a factor in diagnosing it, but you should find a way to go to a cardiologist. I’m not sure if there’s a treatment for tachycardia, but definitely go talk to your doctor, especially if 142bpm is your resting pulse (pulse you have without exerting yourself at all).

What should I do about not being able to get enough blood for the glucometer?
I am a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic. I was given a free One Touch Ultra 2 glocometer kit to test my blood glucose level with. The lancet device goes up to a 7 for depth of puncture. I have it set at 7, but it makes such a light puncture, I can’t get enough blood for an accurate measurement. Sometimes, I can squeeze up enough blood. But mostly I end up with multiple lance pricks in my fingers, with tiny dots of blood from each (and tiny dots of pain, as well). What can or should I do to get out a nice glob of blood for each measurement? The code number on my meter and lancets and strips is 25, if that is any help. Thank you.
I will try that. Why not the pads, though? I have, in desperation, pricked my pads, too. They were no better at producing blood, though.
LOL @ TIN’s 12′ butcher knife idea.
I am so new to this, I was not aware there were OTC lancets. I will look into the Multiclix one.
You have a few options. One, make sure you’re hydrated since dehydration can cause slow bleeding. Two, make sure your hands are warm. Shake them a bit, rub them together, things like that, before pricking. Three, keep your fingers low (below your heart) and pointed down. As a general warning, too, make sure you prick the sides of your fingertips, not the pads.
If those tips don’t work, you could try a larger lancet or a different lancing device. That shouldn’t be necessary, though.
INDICATIONS: FreeStyle Sterile Lancets FreeStyle Lancets are made from very thin, 25 gauge stainless steel for comfort, and sterilized for your protection. FreeStyle Lancets also fit almost all other lancing devices….

When you measure your blood pressure with a sphygmomanometer??
I dont hear the korotkoff sounds until maybe 6-8mmHg after the ticker on my aneroid sphygmomanometer “flickers” as it drops. Do I record it when it starts flicking or when I actually HEAR the sound through the stethoscope?
Thanks. I’m a student by the way, just checking before my exam.
You record when you first hear the korotkoff sounds (diastolic) to when you no longer hear the sounds (systolic).

OK, so I am on this site where other women support each other and one of my blog buddies says she is well over 300 lbs and is diabetic….we are all trying to lose weight…but she says things like, “Today was a good day…I ate well and kept my portions under control” but then when she lists her food, she says stuff like breakfast today was 3 dounuts,or we went to McDonalds and I had 2 bacon/egg buscuits,I had a sandwhich at Wendy’s but only ate 1/4 of the fries,I drank some Root Beer.” I mean, me lecturing her would feel like the pot calling the kettle black, but again, we are there to support each other and it seems like most people just cheer her on…and I am thinking, “Are you kidding? You are not even trying!” But she thinks she is trying…and she is really sweet….and her exercise consists of walking for 10 minutes, to the mailbox…she also complains of several aliments, like migraines, allergies, pulled tendon in the right knee, planter fascitis in her feet….
Suggest to her, in the most polite way possible, that while you’re proud of her for cutting back and not overeating, that possibly, all that sugar and fat might be slowing her progress down. Don’t make her feel ashamed, just make her realize that, uh-oh, she better cut back or she might get set back further!
Good luck, honey. And stay strong with the site! <33

I have had type I diabetes for most of my life (30 years). My 7 year old has had 3 times in the last few weeks when she has vomited and had no other symptoms of a sickness. I checked her fasting blood sugar, and it was 122. I thought that a nondiabetics fasting blood sugar was supposed to be under 100. Does this mean that she is either diabetic or borderline diabetic? When she was a baby she had multiple febrile seizures and each time she had a high blood sugar of 200 or so and it would stay in the high 100′s for a week afterwards. I am just wondering if she could be getting diabetes.
A non-diabetic’s fasting glucose is typically 70 to 100 mg/dL or 3.9 to 5.6 mmol/L. A non-diabetic’s post-prandial (after meal) glucose typically does not exceed 140 mg/dL or 7.8 mmol/L. Please note that I say ‘typically’ as there will be some variation from day to day. No decision should ever be made based upon a single glucose reading. You are correct that your daughter’s fasting glucose of 122 mg/dL or 6.8 mmol/L is a concern but it must be verified by a second reading. When your daughter was a baby she had elevated glucose readings but it sounds as if this was during an illness and therefore these readings would be difficult to interpret. Since this is the weekend I would suggest that you obtain fasting and 2 hour post-prandial glucose readings. On Monday call these readings to your physician’s nurse. The nurse will call you with further instructions. If the readings are outside of the reference ranges suggested above the physician will want to see your daughter for additional laboratory chemistries. Terms such as glucose intolerance, pre-diabetes, and borderline diabetes tend to be used for type 2 rather than type 1 diabetes. Should you daughter prove to have diabetes it will be type1. I am not aware of anyone younger than 10 years old having been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. If I may be of further assistance please let me know. I wish you the very best of health and in all things may God bless.
What might be causing me to have very high diastolic blood pressure at only 22?
My systolic blood pressure is relatively high, but not really high. However, I get diastolic in the 90′s or in the 100′s every time I take my blood pressure. I am overweight, but even still at only 22 I would have that of BP only because of my weight? What are possible causes for this?
Normal diastolic blood pressure is less than 90 as I am sure you know. The elevation in diastolic pressure is at least partially related to you being overweight. Usually when someone develops elevated blood pressure at the age of 22 then we look for secondary causes of high blood pressure, such as excesses in certain hormones. You should see your doctor to be evaluated. If your blood pressure is consistently high, then your doctor may consider evaluating you for causes of secondary high blood pressure. The elevated diastolic blood pressure could also be related to a poor diet, so restrict your sodium intake to less than 2 grams daily, eat a well balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables, low in saturated fats/cholesterol. Also exercise regularly – 1 hour 5 times weekly. Limit your caffeine intake. Also keep in mind that the blood pressure can fluctuate – so monitor it about the same time every day for a little bit and report it to your doctor so he/she knows the trend. Good luck to you. Some examples of secondary causes of blood pressure include hyperaldosteronsim, kidney disease, Cushing syndrome, sleep apnea, pheochromocytoma, and coarctation of the aorta. Don’t worry about the details of these, just realize they are out there and your doctor will determine if you should be evaluated for them.

We are trying to conceive. Last time it took the help of a fertility doctor, and this time we are starting on our own. I used to use the opk’s at the drug store, but that got expensive. Especially when trying to pinpoint ovulation. Then, I got them in bulk off ebay (50 per pack).
Now, I’m wondering if a reusable kit is worth the money. One that does not use saliva. Or, uses saliva and a vaginal monitor as well. Do you guys have an epxerience or something that worked for you?
Or, should I just buy in bulk off ebay?
Thanks Trying!
I think I’m going to use my regular OPKs until I save enough money from my ebaying to pay for the kit.
Those strips are really expensive ($20 for 50) and a mess.
Hi, I thought the urine tests got really expensive as well. I broke down and purchased the ovacue which is the oral and vaginal sensors. It seems to work great and Soooo much easier. I havent gotten to the ovulation part yet (hopfully next week) but I think even though it was $400 all together, it will still be cheaper and easier in the end.

I was recently put on Lantus. Before this I have used the Medport Insure vial protectors with my Humalog and Humulin U, but the Lantus bottle does not fit. Does anyone know of a brand that makes vial holders for a Lantus sized bottle?
Medtronic is a good place to start. Although let me warn you. I have personally used Lantus for one and a half years and had terrible results. Over time I was forced to increase my intake to 24 units a day! Even with the increased dosage II still had bad numbers and I had a good diet. (salads for lunch with no crouton and 1/4 cup dressing and no starchy foods for breakfast) I would seriously urge you to not begin a Lantus regiment. It poses serious health risk and has only been out for about 7 years and was only tested on 1,022 people. Very reminiscent of Vioxx and Celebrex. Try sticking to Humalog. And if you can look into getting an insulin pump. Medtronic sells the one I use.

Good friend with Diabetes, High Cholesterol, Restless Leg & Sleep Apnea… Wow…?
I have a good friend who suffers from type 1 (not caused from being overweight) Diabetes, Restless Leg (he thinks) and (also thinks this causes severe) Sleep Apnea.
My friend is 33 yrs old, thin, doesn’t smoke, works wayyy to much, doesn’t do cardio, and doesn’t sleep enough.
I’m so worried about him and pray for him all the time that he will get better. He isn’t going to the doctor for his sleep disorders or restless leg but I can’t make him.
Does anyone else suffer from all of these things? Do you know anyone who does or has? Is there anything you have done that has helped you get better in any or all of the above problems? All I can think to do is pray and encourage him to do more exersize (which doesn’t work) and encourage him to go to a sleep specialist (which he won’t do.)
I really care for him but don’t know how to help! Thanks for listening and for any input you may have. Much appreciated.
Type 1 diabetes unfortunately is worse than type 2… he will need his insuline…he better go and see a doctor…Diabetes can cause all kinds of health problems…if you care about him make him see reason to go to a doctor…
with type 2 he could just change his diet and that might help…
I am sure you care and he must know you have his good health at heart… I hope he does go…if not for himself then because he believes in you…I think it is necessary he sees a doctor…xxx if he got high cholesterol he needs most likely medication…
Hey.. a hypochondriac is a person always happy to run to the doctor even if he or she is not ill… Imaginary illness.. how does this tie up with this case, he does not even want to see a doctor when he has diabetes and high cholesterol.. so he is the opposite of a hypochondriac… some guys indeed.. that goes for my pal who wrote the remark..
xx
Good luck xx

I had sex with my boyfriend 5 days ago…it had been months since the last time we did it because we had broken-up…we never used condoms before…it hurted when doing it…today at midnight I woke up feeling feverish and this morning I noticed that I had developed a rash, it burns and itches. All over from the clit to the entrance of the vagina is red , swollen and bumpy. I looked up for STD’s pictures but thank God it doesn’t look like any of those pics. I’m also a diabetic. I’m scared but can’t afford to go to the doctor untill a copuple more days. I’m desperate!!!
Your STD, if thats what it is, isn’t going to look like the pictures on the internet.. You need to go get tested. If its just a normal rash it could just be irritated. But since you have a fever i hate to say it but it has to be something more. You definitley need to go get it checked out to be on the safe side, like I said you could just be irritated down there if you had sex and you were very dry and/or maybe you are allergic to the condom? Good luck hun

I had this huge blister on my hand from a skillet and my mom told me to break a piece off of her aloe plant to rub on it so when it really did make it start going away I got impatient anyways and decided to use one of the little syringes her boyfriend uses for insulin (he’s diabetic and has lots of extras and told me I could use one) to inject the gel into the blister. Don’t worry it was a brand new needle and didn’t have any medicine in it or anything but OMG it burned like crazy so I squeezed it back out but now the blister turned snow white and the skin around it is all red. It can’t actually do anything bad to my hand or anything, can it? I guess I figured if it worked well applied topically it would be even better inside the sore. BIG mistake

People with diabetes? symptoms? please im really worried!?
Hi, im 13 years old and its been brought up to me that i may have diabetes. I want to know some of the symptoms so i wont look stupid going to the doctors if i dont have any of the correct symptoms?
basically at the moment i have -
-a numbness or tingling in my feet and sometimes my hands
-im feeling more hungry and drink a lot more
-i have a blurred vision, but i do wear glasses sometimes so it may have something to do with this, but i have more blurred vision than usual
could you tell me if these are some symptoms of diabetes in children and what are some others?
also what procedures take place when you have diabetes (injections, blood tests, what do you have to do to look after yourself when you have diabetes?)
please reply, im really worried!
Hi –
From what you describe it does sound like you may be diabetic.
It’s not the worst thing and what our describing tells me your blood glucose level is running too High. On average a normal person’s glucose level should be between 80-120 or so. When your really thirsty that’s your bodies way of telling you to drink water to help flush out your system.
First thing I would suggest you do – have our parents pick up a Blood Glucose meter at the store I would recommend either the OneTouch Ultra mini or FreeStyle
Your parents insurance will cover both however the test strips for the FreeStyle are cheaper.
Once you get the meter test yourself; it doesn’t hurt at all.
Super small little droplet of blood on the test strip to tell you what your current sugar/glucose level is.
If you’re above 180 then your running high
If you’re less than 70 then I’d suggest you eat something
IMPORTANT Things to keep in mind:
Fruit juices are fast acting when you are LOW Sugar
Always good idea to have a small can or two with you.
Once you know for sure if you are diabetic or not
your doctor will work out a proper plan for you… At first they “should” run you a little higher until you get the proper balance of insulin
When it comes to injections; I would highly recommend opting for the prefilled insulin pen. The great thing about the prefilled pen’s is the fact you can easily take your shot with you.
There are two types of insulin the doctor may put you on; Humalog (fast acting) and Lantus (Long acting)
The Fast acting insulin will help lower our sugar; to keep you in balance when you eat your meals. The doc won’t really tell you this but if you feel you’ve eaten too much; you simply get a couple of extra units. The LONG acting (Lantus) you will only get once a day or evening which helps keep you balanced all day; while the fast acting only works for 4-6hrs
Lots of information I’m sharing – sorry if its all jumbled together.
You may want to know where I get all my information; its from personal experience I’ve been a diabetic ever since I was 6yrs old. And honestly it hasn’t been that bad at all. And your not alone; sadly there are more cases reported every single day. But its a treatable, manageable condition. But you do have to keep it in check as you can run into problems.
The important thing to do at first is frequent blood tests.
After a few months you’ll start to get in-tune with your body and your feelings. Listen to your feelings and when you don’t feel so good; do a TEST!!!
There are many support groups around the area; ask your doctor for a referral to a nutritionist as they will discuss with you how to calculate the carb count in different types of food.
After dealing with it for so long you learn how foods react with you and if it will stay with you a while or cause your sugar to jump and then crash down.
So in summary
Get yourself checked
Buy yourself a meter
Test Frequently
Always have a couple of cans of Apple Juice handy; in backpack, desk, etc…
Though any juice works; however apple juice seem to react the fastest if you are “low”
Learn to listen to your body and the feelings you have and (REACT) to them
Lastly – make sure you have your eyes checked regularly
Also ask your doctor to check your T3&T4 levels
It’s common in diabetics to have hyperactive or hypoactive Thyroid
Check out the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation which has lots of information on the topic and they are working towards finding a “CURE” which I do hope they find one soon.
I hope that answers your questions
If you’d like to talk and have more questions or your parents would like to chat
Feel free to contact me
Warmest Regards,
Adam

How can I treat a foot wound that won’t heal at home?
First off this is a non-diabetic related wound. It’s near the heel of my foot and has been very hard to clear up. I have been to four doctors and specialists and been on several rounds of antibiotics. It clears up while I’m taking the antibiotics but as soon as I get off them, the wound starts to act up again. Is there anything I can try using at home remedies to treat this problem? Any products I can buy to help keep the infection out? Any suggestions will be helpful
I would try soaking it in epson salt that has been desolved in warm water. Epson salt is inexpensive. It can be found in any supermarket or drug store. I have used it to cure many stubborn infections.
