Oxygen Concentrators Archives

For both patients and family members, the new alternatives in portable oxygen units mean greater freedom of movement. Ambulatory patients need oxygen systems they can use in a wide range of activities and that allow them to pursue their lifestyles.

The benefits of portable oxygen systems are extremely high, not only from the point of view of being able to move around, but also because it allows for a healthier lifestyle.

The new models not only mean new designs but also new technical applications that make them lighter and easier to operate. They mean longer lasting oxygen supply, they mean simplicity of use and they mean being able to regain your independence.

A portable oxygen system is available as oxygen tanks or cylinders (compressed oxygen or liquid oxygen) or as oxygen concentrators. portable oxygen systems

Prior to 2002, oxygen concentrators were not really portable as their sizes and therefore weights made it difficult to move. They could and were moved from one room to another, but were not really portable. Since then however a series of new designs have become available, and if the trend continues, even more developments will appear.

As they extract oxygen from the air around us, they do not store oxygen as such, but absorb it and re-distribute it to the patient. They are powered by electricity and the new portable models are also battery operated (one battery charge would typically last for 3 hours at 2 bpm – but always check your equipment’s instructions as different models have different features).

An important benefit that has come with portable oxygen equipment is that it has increased the possibility of travel where for example many have now been approved by the FAA – having said that it is always a good idea to check with your airline before a flight.

The shape and size of portable oxygen tanks have been redesigned making them easier to move and carry.

In the area of shape, as with compressed oxygen tanks, they are now slimmer and easier to fit into trolleys or carry packs.

Many patients are using combinations of systems that are fulfilling their requirements. Whatever the choice, the important thing is that portable oxygen equipment is helping people and expanding their range of activities.portable oxygen equipment

Patients dependent on oxygen can now move and be more active as these systems have been designed with your needs in mind.

One of the major requirements of a portable oxygen system is that you can easily carry it, you can move it around without any gymnastics and you can store it easily and without any problems – the new systems let you do this.

From the point of view of someone who needs oxygen, these new models have extended your range of activities as they are easier to place in vehicles, in public places or in friends houses – and this means you can get out more with less stress.

Traveling with a travel oxygen concentrator is simple if you know the rules. The biggest problem seen when traveling with a portable concentrator is the airline. Some employees still do not know what they are.

Some will give you wrong advice over the phone and when you get to the airport you find you are missing an important part of the unit and can’t get on the plane. There is nothing more fustrating than hearing from one employee of the airline that says you are all set only to find out you are not after you get there.

Here are a few good tips to remember when traveling with a portable concentrator. We suggest always making sure your batteries are charged. Do this the night before you leave. If you are renting an oxygen machine try and get it a couple days early to insure it is working perfectly. It is a machine and you don’t want to find out there is a problem the night before you leave.
travel oxygen
Most airlines want you to have extra batteries no matter how long your flight is. So make sure you have extra batteries with you. Depending on how long your trip is and what travel oxygen concentrator you have will depend how many extra batteries you should have. You are probably going to use you concentrator on the way to the airport and use some of the battery power.

As you probably already know there are plugs to plug into at the airport but there is usually someone using them with there laptop computer. Some of the best advice I heard, is to bring along an adapter for more plugs. This way you are not asking someone to give you their plug. You are just asking them to share plugs with you. Its a lot easier that way.

There are a few different units to choose from with travel oxygen. Most important make sure the unit you select is FAA approved or there airlines will not let you use it. portable concentrator If the oxygen concentrator is FAA approved it will have a sticker on it stating just that. The most popular portable oxygen concentrators are the Inogen One, Sequal Eclipse and Respironics Evergo.

Here are the differences:

The Inogen One was one of the first travel oxygen concentrators to be FAA approved. This unit is quiet and weighs less than 10 pounds. It usually comes with a carry bag, a rolling cart and one battery. Battery life is about 3 hours depending on liter flow.

The Respironics Evergo is one of the newest units. This unit is also very quiet. The Evergo usually comes with a carry bag, a rolling cart and 2 batteries. The Evergo carries two batteries at a time and has a battery life of up to 8 hours depending on liter flow. Remember, even though you have up to 8 hours of battery life the most airlines want you to have a spare.

Than there is the Sequal Eclipse. This portable concentrator is a bit heavier than the Inogen or Respironics. The unit is about 18 pounds and comes with a rolling cart and one battery. The Eclipse is the only FAA portable oxygen concentrator that has a continuous flow mode. So for those of you on continuous flow oxygen, this is your only choice. Even if you are on pulse but expect to sleep with the unit this is your best choice because it does both continuous and pulse. Battery life on the Sequal Eclipse is about 3 hours per battery depending on liter flow.

Have safe and happy travels!

Want to know what an oxygen machine is? Read on to learn about oxygen generators.

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer. – Dave Barry

Oxygen is essential for us to be alive, rather for the earth to work right, oxygen is required and this already nominal section of the atmospheric air is decreasing more and more. Earlier people used to breathe in twice as much as oxygen that we breathe in today. Oxygen Generator concentrators increase the oxygen level in the atmospheric air where they are ignited.

These generators or concentrators are used in aquariums, food sterilization, oxygen bar, oxygen therapy, laboratory use and some agricultural uses as well. These are devices that discharge oxygen as a result of chemical reaction. The source is generally an inorganic superoxide, chlorate or perchlorate.

Ozonides are also strong oxygen sources. The oxygen o2 concentrator is ignited with a firing pin and the chemical reaction that takes place is usually exothermic which makes the generator a fire hazard.

The o2 concentrator is very quiet, portable and maintenance-free since it has oxygen conserververy few moving parts. These oxygen machines are so small that they can be used in combination with your existing generator system as well. In these concentrator generators air is used as the gas that is fed and its efficiency decreases in humid conditions.

There is another system that utilizes the molecular sieves to split air into its elements, which are then directed towards the commercial system that uses up the oxygen and discharges the other gases. This kind of process is absolutely opposite to the cryogenic separation of gases.

These kind of oxygen generator concentrators or oxygen conserver are used in commercial airlines also as they provide emergency oxygen to passengers from the pressure drop in the cabin though these are not used in the cockpit or for the cockpit crew. Oxygen generators are placed above each and every row.

In case of decompression the panels are either opened automatically by the automatic pressure switch or by a manual switch. Pressing the switch releases the masks.

Once the passengers pull down the masks, they remove the retaining pins that trigger the oxygen production. In the core the oxidizer has Sodium Chlorate that is mixed with less than 5 percent Barium Peroxide and less than one percent of Potassium Perchlorate. Lead Styphnate and tetracene are mixed and they form the explosive in the percussion cup. The chemical reaction that occurs is exothermic and the temperature of the canister reaches well above 260 degree.
o2 concentrator
This process produces oxygen for about fifteen to twenty minutes. The diameter of the two-mask generator is usually 63 mm or 2.5 inches in diameter and it is 223 mm or 8.8 inches long whereas the diameter of the three-mask generator is 70 mm or 2.8 inches and the length is 250 mm or ten inches long.

Oxygen candle is a kind of oxygen machine that is cylindrical in shape and contains a mixture of sodium chlorate and iron powder. The mixture smolders when ignited at about 600 degree, give sodium chloride and iron oxide as by product, apart from 6.5 man-hours of oxygen per kilogram of the mixture. Release of oxygen takes place at a fixed rate.

The mixture can be stored as long as required, even for twenty years. The process that the reaction follows would be clinically called thermal decomposition. The heat that is produced is due to the burning of iron. The candle is generally wrapped in thermal insulation so that the temperature can be maintained and the equipments around can also be protected from the heat generated.

These generators are used in aircrafts, firefighters breathing apparatus, submarines and the like where a small and portable oxygen concentrator generator with a long shelf life is required.

With the costs of long-term health care consisting of many expenses that range from medications to transportation and even to home medical equipment like oxygen therapy equipment, most of us are getting bogged down with the ever-increasing expenses.

However, oxygen therapy is an essential part of our lives and a portable oxygen machine is fast becoming the most useful medical equipment around!

Oxygen therapy is an essential treatment option for patients suffering from a number of respiratory diseases like COPD. Scientists have thought up different ways of solving this problem and have finally come up with two technical solutions for long-term oxygen treatment - a portable oxygen generator and a portable oxygen tank. Long-term oxygen treatment is said to be oxygen therapy that lasts for more than 15 hours a day. When you come to think of it, that is a lot of help to any patient.

portable oxygen tank

The portable oxygen generator is a machine that provides supplemental oxygen to a patient by compressing atmospheric air to almost 4 atmospheres of pressure and by trapping nitrogen out of this compressed air. This makes the oxygen in the compressed air more concentrated. The machine is indeed expensive but when you take into consideration the fact that you are literally receiving free air supply, its worth it isn’t it?

Today’s innovative oxygen concentrators offer a high level of convenience and mobility, which was unheard of a couple of years back. Liquid oxygen and compressed systems require a portable oxygen tank that is large and has to be refilled and stored or handled with care. A portable oxygen machine can be simply plugged into any electrical outlet.

Some interesting features of portable oxygen concentrators are: rechargeable batteries and they can be plugged into any car’s accessory outlet for convenience.

The Uses of Portable Oxygen Concentrators and how they can Benefit You

Those suffering from a number of health problems might require supplemental oxygen as part of their treatment protocol. There are essentially three basic methods to receive oxygen, namely through liquid oxygen tanks, compressed oxygen cylinders and oxygen concentrators. Portable oxygen concentrators have a number of uses and benefits, which include issues like use, storage, travel and safety. Here are some of the uses of portable oxygen concentrators:

  • Uses – The biggest advantage of a portable oxygen concentrator is its use. User friendly and easy to use, these systems are simply plugged into a basic electrical outlet. Most other systems like liquid oxygen tanks require large tanks, which are very heavy and are not designed to be portable.
  • Storage Purposes – Unlike compressed and liquid oxygen systems that require large cylinders to be stored in, Portable oxygen concentrators are easy to store. These systems don’t need special storage facilities so you don’t have to bother about finding a safe place to keep it in.
  • Travel – Some portable concentrators can be plugged into your car’s accessory outlet and come with special features like rechargeable batteries. But, if you are traveling by plane, you wont be allowed to carry compressed tanks as they are classified as hazardous to health. Some portable oxygen concentrators have been approved by the FAA, making it possible to carry your system with you on your flight.
  • Delivery – Compressed and liquid oxygen systems tanks need to be refilled. It is not possible to get these refilled by yourself, so they need to be delivered from an equipment store. This can be highly inconvenient, as there are set schedules involved. A portable oxygen concentrator on the other hand, does not require these tanks so there is no need to wait for delivery.
  • Safety – The pressure that compressed oxygen tanks are under is very high. So, they have to be handled with extreme care all the time. A portable oxygen concentrator does not have any of these safety hazards.

These are just a few of the benefits of using a portable oxygen concentrator. With these systems, there is no need to worry about storing these hazardous tanks in your house.

I would like to hear comments/critiques of portable oxygen concentrator from anyone who has used them. I do know all about portable oxygen tanks… I also know that we can NEVER get the company that provides them to my mother to ever show up and bring her more. (She’s on a HMO policy, so we can’t change from the provider. BTW: Beware of Apria!). I know insurance will not pay for the concentrator, so I will have to pay for this for her out of my pocket. I just need some recommendations from anyone who has experienced a portable oxygen concentrator for themselves (or vicariously through a loved one).
Thank you in advance to all who respond!

I’ve had several test where overnight I wore the thing on my finger to test my oxygen saturation levels, and apparently the levels went down because now the Dr. has ordered an oxygen concentrator to wear at night. We’re doing another oxygen level test in a few weeks, to see if the concentrator helps. I’m just wondering if this is a normal first step, because I see a lot of people on here use other things. I’ve also noticed that I’m waking up with horrible headeaches after sleeping with the oxygen, is that normal?
It’s just a normal concentrator with a humidifier bottle and nasal canula. I don’t think the headaches are from it being too tight, because it only goes over my ears and is just tight enough that it doesn’t fall off.
