which is the best brand and model number for home Automatic blood pressure arm monitor?

Omron, A&D are some of the brands I have heard of…but which model? My budget ranges from $50 to $100.

We have a generic “Pharmacist’s Choice” Digital Blood Pressure Monitor 00734. It was recommended by our pharmacist, because, according to him, it is made by the same folks that make the Omron one, but it only costs about $50.

So I recommend you ask your pharmacist for a recommendation. Get one that fits just above the elbow. The wrist ones read differently, since above the elbow is the industry standard.

Ours works just fine, by the way. We really like that it inflates itself, so we don’t even need to pump it up. (Who wants to pump up a bulb when they are trying to observe their resting BP?!)

Home Blood Pressure Monitor/BP interpretation question?

I have recently (4 days ago) begun medication for postpartum hypertension. I have a home automatic blood pressure machine. The last several times I have taken it, I took it twice in a row, and got different numbers from the first time, BUT the second number is pretty consistent. My numbers have been
:
1. 119/99, then 123/83 (Yesterday morning)
2. 136/90, then 123/83 (Yesterday afternoon)
3. 130/96, then 123/86 (Yesterday evening)
4. 130/89, then 121/90, then 116/81 (This morning)

Well, let’s make sure we’re doing this right. First off, a machine is not accurate as the regular ones that doctors use. So, to minimize error, I recommend you do it 3 times and get the average. Also keep your arm out perpendicular to your body. Remember how old movie zombies look like with their arms out? That arm position. That height is optimal for reading blood pressure. And make sure you always use the left arm, it’s a little more accurate.

Physiological basis for resting heart rate variation in an individual?

Human physiology lab question, and I’m a bit stumped…
Question is: “Comment on the probable physiological basis for any variability of data for your subject of resting heart rate as measured in the lab.”
I know Cardiac output = heart rate X stroke volume and then blood pressure = CO X total peripheral resistance.
With exercise the heart rate should increase, SV to a lesser extent, and TPR decreases due to vasodilation in muscles.
I guess I’m just confused why there would be a variation with an individual’s resting heart rate within a set time. If the person had been exercising before would that mean they could still be recovering and therefore time elapsed would account for increasingly lower resting heart rates? (We did not measure “true” resting heart rate i.e. with the person laying down for half an hour.) Would this be because of lasting vasodilation or something else?

Your body has a very fast and responsive nervous system which regulates blood pressure and heart rate on an almost beat-by-beat basis. If you are at rest, it may vary because of emotional factors like stress (which would cause it to rise).

In addition, there is a small variation in heart rate with breathing, which is more pronounced in younger people as well as some older individuals (like myself!). As you breathe in, you decrease intrathoracic pressure. When this happens, your baroreceptors sense a lower pressure and your heart rate will increase. The opposite occurs as you breathe out and the pressure rises, which will cause the heart rate to slow.

why do some people still hate marijuana and think its dangerous?

Weed has recently been scientifically proven to keep alzheimer’s disease, a stroke and some types of cancers at bay, it helps ease headaches and stomach aches, it reduces stress and lowers blood pressure, it increases appetite and reduces nautiousness, it doesn’t cause people to want to commit crimes or violence, it’s not addictive and you can’t die and/or overdose on it.

I actually have a legitimate reason for hating it. Ever since I was a little girl, my parents have smoked pot. When I was a child, I would go to school stinking of marijuana and my teachers would always pull me in to their office to talk about it. Of course I couldn’t say anything, cause they were my parents.

As the years wore on, my parents “friends” would come over more frequently. Our entire house stank and I was diagnosed with asthma (which I was told later was probably caused by all the second hand smoke I inhaled).

When I got to be 16, one of my parents’ “friends” came over and, after smoking, tried to force his way into the bathroom while I was showering. My parents threw him out and I never saw him again. But still…these were pot smokers.

Pot is a mind-altering drug. It doesn’t matter that there are worse things out there for you. By that argument, a rapist should be let go because there are worse offenders out there. Actually, pointing out the faults of others to dodge accountability is not an argument, it’s a side-step tactic.

p.s. my own mother said if she could go back and say “no” to her first joint, she would.
