Safe foods, in Europe, for Type I diabetic?

I have a friend whose son will be travelling to Europe this summer as “student diplomat”. He’s 13. He has type I diabetes. We’re from America and want to make sure he’s ok. He wants to experience local foods, but since many carb counters here in the US don’t cover local cuisine, we need help. He’ll be in France, England, Belgium, Scotland, Ireland and who knows where else in that vicinity. What do you recommend he safely try or steer clear off? Thanks for any help.
I don’t mean to indicate it’s unsafe. I meant for his safety since it’s new experience, we want him to have a great time and learn. He wants to experience foods we’re not familiar with here in the U.S. and be a good example to others that not all teens are fussy eaters.
He has an insulin pump. He wants to eat as normally as possible, but be smart about it since he’s not familiar with local foods.

At 13, he’s old enough to move away from carb counters and prescriptive approaches to eating. Use the time from now until summer to help him recognise carbohydrates and their effects on him. Then he will be well equipped to travel to Europe, and also live an independent life when he’s older, choosing what to eat, and how much of it.

He will anyway have to monitor his blood sugar more carefully on the trip, jet lag and unfamiliar routines can play havoc.

I’m kinda chubby and I’m trying to lose weight, but I was wondering, does exercise and weight loss help to prevent diabetes? What is the real deal with High Fructose Corn Syrup?

Opponents to HFCS say that it is the reason why America is experiencing such a problem with obesity and diabetes. Supports of HFCS, like the United States Corn Refiners Association argue that other countries in the world who’s people consume HFCS as well don’t have problems with obesity and diabetes.
1) Is this true?
2) Does that mean HFCS isn’t bad in any way?
3) If it is debatable whether HFSC is good or bad, why do opponents of it speak so strongly about their views? Might there be a political motive behind this debate on both sides? If so, what is each side’s real motive?
For those of you who say its just sugar, if it is, then why do so many people say that it is not ‘just sugar’? I honestly don’t know what to believe. But, again, if its just sugar, what is the motive behind the people saying its not ‘just sugar’?

the reason for the epedemic in America is the food we eat..they are putting unlabeled appetite enhancing additives and things that make you craves the food for more profits as a addicted or hungry person buys more of the product. It is said when american move overseas or to other countries and eat essentially the same diet, they lose weight and when they come here and do the same they gain weight. I have heard the diet foods are a prime source for where they put this stuff. I have heard that HFCS was one of these enhancers and that why it is in nearly everything to cover all the bases. We need better foods in the US or to try to eat only totally natural and organic food processed as little as possible. I believe from things said and the knowledge expressed it comes from Kevin Trudeau on TV as he is very knowledgeable, talks about his trouble with federal trade commission and references his website. I am lactose intolerant and type 2 diabetic. What the heck can I eat that won’t upset my stomach? :( ?

I have always liked cheeses and dairy but now I can’t have it because it feels like my stomach is being torn apart when I do eat it. And I am trying to stay away from sugar. What kind of foods or recipes would be good for someone with my diet? I have been switching snackfoods to things like nuts, fruit, vegetables. I’m just so sick of the same food! I also can’t have hardly any tomatoe stuff because of my acid reflux. Basically I just would like some nutrional advice. .

There is a plethora of things you can eat. Very healthy things that will help lower your insulin resistance, reduce your insulin requirements, improve your energy, and help the acid reflux. I don’t have the time or space to explain here, but rest assured, there are so many tasty foods and food combinations, that it’s hard to imagine. My sweetheart is vegan so there’s no meat or dairy in the house. What she does with vegetables, nuts, fruits, and whole grains would amaze you. There are also vegan dairy substitutes that, frankly, I wouldn’t go near just a few years ago. Turns out, they’re not as bad as I imagined. My insulin resistance is no longer an issue. I no longer take any medication for my diabetes. I have more energy than in the past 20 years. It’s amazing when you give the body the foods that it was optimized for. Spend a little time reading things like, “The China Study”, by T. Colin Campbell, or “Eat To Live”, by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, or “The McDougall Plan”, by Dr. John McDougall. Again, there’s no limit… you just have to shift your paradigms a little.

What should I be feeding my 9 week old kitten?

I’m new in the cat game, but I have had puppies before. I just rescued or adopted a stray kitten. I’ve been feeding her purina kitten chow (dry) mixed in with some wet food, (Whiskas Jr.). She’s eating, but man her out put smells terrible. I’ve read online that some of these cat food brands can give cats diabetes, and what not, and I do not want my baby going through all that. So, price not being a problem, what would be the best thing I can feed her? Oh, I’d have to buy it online. (I’m in the army and stationed on a super small base in Germany, hence why I got the only kitten food they had)… Thanks!!!

I feed my kitten, 8 mos old, AvoDerm Select Cuts canned food. They come in 3 flavors and I feed her 3 times per day. This is a 100% canned meat diet. This can be purchased online. Any canned food that’s all meat, vitamins, minerals, and taurine is great for her. Most can be purchased online. Always buy a small amount because you never know which flavor she won’t like. AvoDerm Select Cuts comes in Tuna and Crab, Tuna Sardine and Shrimp, and Chicken Chunks. I don’t necessarily like how 2 of the 3 are fish, but my cat gets mainly chicken and few tuna throughout the week. She doesn’t like the Tuna Sardine and Shrimp. Also I give her raw chicken/turkey necks to snack on during the week as this is quite healthy for them also. I plan on transitioning her to a half canned half raw diet. It doesn’t matter what age the cat is, they all should be eating meat only since they are strictly carnivores. Raw diet can also be purchased online and is delivered to you frozen. You don’t have to add anything to it, just thaw the amount she’ll eat and feed it to her. It’s on the expensive side, 20 day supply costs approx $75, but since money is no object, then that’s great for your cat. Money, for me, gets in the way of my cat having the best diet, but her diet is much better than many cats.

Edit: Since you’re in Germany, I don’t know if they would have any place that would deliver frozen raw cat food. You can also buy your own raw meat for her, but google the instructions on what supplements need to be added and where they can be purchased. You should make sure those directions are followed so she gets the adequate amount of her vitamins, minerals, and taurine.

Cinamon, Diabetes and Insulin Resistance

A few months ago I stumbled upon an article that tied together cinnamon, diabetes, and insulin resistance. Intrigued, I did some follow up research and made some astonishing discoveries. In fact, I’m absolutely amazed that what I discovered isn’t covered on the nightly news, the major newspapers, and is a constant top story on Drudge considering the profundity of what you’re about to learn.

First, the background on insulin, insulin resistance, and diabetes. After we eat, food is broken down into glucose, the simple sugar that is the main source of energy for the body’s cells. But our cells cannot use glucose without insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin helps the cells take in glucose and convert it to energy. When the pancreas does not make enough insulin or the body is unable to use the insulin that is present, the cells cannot use glucose. Excess glucose builds up in the bloodstream, setting the stage for diabetes.

Being obese or overweight affects the way insulin works in your body. Extra fat tissue can make your body resistant to the action of insulin. If you have insulin resistance, your muscle, fat, and liver cells do not use insulin properly. The pancreas tries to keep up with the demand for insulin by producing more. Eventually, the pancreas cannot keep up with the body’s need for insulin, and excess glucose builds up in the bloodstream. Many people with insulin resistance have high levels of blood glucose and high levels of insulin circulating in their blood at the same time.

People with blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet in the diabetic range have “pre-diabetes” or “insulin resistance.” Insulin resistance is a hidden condition, one that doesn’t present any symptoms, that increases the likelihood of developing diabetes and debilitating heart conditions. If you have pre-diabetes, you have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, formerly called adult-onset diabetes or non-insulin-dependent diabetes. Studies have shown that most people with pre-diabetes go on to develop type 2 diabetes within 10 years, unless they lose 5 to 7 percent of their body weightówhich is about 10 to 15 pounds for someone who weighs 200 poundsóby making modest changes in their diet and level of physical activity. People with pre-diabetes also have a higher risk of heart disease. Type 2 diabetes is sometimes defined as the form of diabetes that develops when the body does not respond properly to insulin, as opposed to type 1 diabetes, in which the pancreas makes no insulin at all. At first, the pancreas keeps up with the added demand by producing more insulin. In time, however, it loses the ability to secrete enough insulin in response to meals.

OK, I’ve established the connection with diabetes and insulin resistance. What’s up with the cinnamon? In August 2000, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced preliminary findings that “Cinnamon may significantly help people with type 2 diabetes improve their ability to regulate their blood sugar. As a matter of fact, this study found that it increased glucose metabolism 20-fold.” Over the next few years additional studies were conducted with humans to further evaluate this surprising result. In one small 60 patient study conducted in Pakistan, reporting in the journal Diabetes Care, all the patients had been treated for type 2, adult onset diabetes for several years and were taking anti-diabetic drugs to increase their insulin output. But they were not yet taking insulin to help process their blood glucose. The subjects were given small doses of cinnamon ranging from as little as a quarter teaspoon up to 2 teaspoons a day for 40 days.

The results again surprised the scientists, but were even more profound than previous. Not only did the cinnamon reduce the blood sugar levels and increase the natural production of insulin, it lowered their blood cholesterol as well. Even 20 days after the cinnamon treatment had ended, the patients continued to see beneficial effects.

This is good news for the more than 50 million Americans who suffer from diabetes and/or heart disease. All the patients in the study showed better glucose metabolism and natural insulin production when they took cinnamon capsules that delivered less than two teaspoons a day of the spice.

Specifically, their blood cholesterol levels were lowered in the range of 10 to 26 percent, affecting overall cholesterol levels and reducing the LDL (known as the bad cholesterol) but not reducing levels of HDL, the good cholesterol.

This is also potentially good news for the many millions more of us who suffer from insulin resistance, sometimes known as pre-diabetes, or the Metabolic Syndrome. Lowering blood sugar levels, and improving cholesterol ratios can help reverse pre-diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome, and in fact may actually prevent the onset of full diabetes.

Better news still, while cinnamon addresses elevated blood sugar levels and helps to combat insulin resistance, it is also a successful factor in helping you lose weight. The fat cells in your abdomen are particularly sensitive to high insulin levels, and are very effective at storing energy far more so that fat cells you would find in other areas such as the lower body (i.e. hips, rear-end, thighs). Because abdominal fat cells are so close to your digestive organs, and there is an extensive network of blood vessels circulating in the abdominal area, it is even easier for fat cells to store excess glucose there.

Now here’s the challenge: getting enough cinnamon over the course of a day without getting absolutely sick to death of the taste. After doing this research, I decided to be my own guinea pig for testing. I spent the first week putting a couple of teaspoons of cinnamon in a bowl of oatmeal every morning and after about the third day, I knew that wasn’t going to be a workable long term strategy. I next went online and found an excellent source of cinnamon capsules. I’ve been taking two cinnamon capsules a day ever since I made my discovery and the effects have been profound. I’ve lost 14-lbs and no longer have a noticeable bulge around my waistline. I changed nothing else in my daily routine other than adding the cinnamon capsules. My diet is predominantly low-carb but I’m not fanatic about it. I have a sedate office job and the extent of my exercise is doing household chores and playing with the dogs. This certainly doesn’t qualify as a rigorous scientific controlled test, however I’m certainly convinced as I’m a believer in finding out what works and sticking with it.

What are some healthy foods/recipes that are easy to make?

My boyfriend has high blood pressure and is 40 pounds over weight for his age, only 19 years old. He eats very unhealthy foods, like fast food every day. There are lots of options to be healthy, but remember to include some good fats and flavor in your recipies because otherwise he won’t want to stick to his new diet and will end up binging. Not good. Also, no frying (!) and the less butter or oil you use the better.

Any kind of chicken or fish broiled or grilled (with creative seasonings to change it up) is great paired with fresh steamed veggies w/ salt and pepper. sounds boring but it’s great if you spice it up with herbs, light cheeses, lemon zest, etc., you can have different flavors all the time.

Get light italian dressing and drizzle over sliced tomatoes, cucumbers and low fat feta cheese for a side dish.

My favorite snack right now is baby carrots with hummus (roasted red pepper flavor) and it’s awesome. filling and flavorful and light on calories. If ever in doubt, wrap your favorite salad, easy on dressing, in a pita or something.

These are only ideas, nothing fancy, but hopefully it helps!

As the parent of a diabetic, I have found nutrition labels to be a godsend. The mandate to have this information on all packaged/supermarket food is fairly recent. (am ballparking 15 years give or take?) My question only stems from curiousity. As a diabetic, or parent to one, what on earth did you do before nutrition labels were made available?

After I was diagnosed at 12 years old, my family spent a lot of time with a dietitian, learning how many carbs were in everything. They gave us a lot of materials that had nutritional info on it, that we often referred to.The rest was experimentation. As in: last time I ate _______ my blood sugar level _______, so next time we will compensate for it.

No not because of eating too much sweets. It has nothing to do w/that. Your body should be able to handle it, if you dont have any problemswith your pancreas. Sooner or later, a lot of adults (especially older adults) will have Type 2 diabetes, and that can be a normal aging change that happens. Even if you’re not predisposed to it, and even if you;re not obese, even though those things are definetely risk factors, it doesn’t mean that a skinny person w/no disposition or genetic history will not get diabetes, sometimes itjust happens, and your pancreas decides to go on vacation. But consumption of sugar in large quantities, will nto cause you to have diabetes. Its not a risk factor. Neither has there been any research that points in that direction. ENJOY YOUR SWEETS while you can!!

Nothing about that menu, except maybe the salad, is all that diabetic friendly. Diabetics restrict carbohydrates, mainly high-glycemic carbohydrates that convert quickly into glucose in the blood, raising blood sugar.

Potatoes, gravy, and schnitzel are all full of fast-acting carbohydrates. Gravies are made from a roux (wheat flour). Schnitzels are meats coated in breadcrumbs (again, wheat flour). Potatoes are very starchy and tend to spike blood sugar.

I can’t give you exact measurements, but use nutritional websites to count carbohydrates. Every diabetic tolerates carbohydrates differently, but even generous recommendations advise that diabetics not exceed 30-45 grams of carbohydrate per meal and 15 grams per snack.

Here’s an example of a meal I might make myself:

Grilled Pesto Chicken
2 thinly cut slices of grilled chicken breast, lightly seasoned with salt and pepper
Homemade pesto sauce (chopped basil leaves, chopped pine nuts, olive oil, 2-3 chopped garlic cloves, Parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper blended in a food processor) or a low-carbohydrate packet of pesto if a sauce cannot be made)
Sliced mushrooms, fresh
Mozzarella cheese

Grill the breasts or cook them in a casserole dish until mostly done. Heat the pesto sauce on medium, adding in the mushrooms until mushrooms become tender. Pour pesto sauce on top of cooked chicken, sprinkle mozzarella cheese and a little extra Parmesan cheese on top. Bake for about 10 more minutes on 350 or until cheese is melted and a little browned on top. Serve with grilled asparagus or steamed broccoli.

This is a healthy meal that is low in carbohydrates. Although diabetics don’t have to watch fat content, some people are very concerned about it, so the fat content can be minimized by simply switching to low-fat mozzarella cheese and skimping on the Parmesan cheese. Everything else is very low fat, except the olive oil, which contains very healthy fats.

If any of your meals or snacks have fruit, stick with berries because they’re lower in sugar than most types of fruit.

Mellitus means sweet urine.
The ancient Greeks used to test by seeing if the ants liked the urine (attracted to the sugar in it)

The pinprick (to get a drop of blood) is sometimes painful, sometimes you do not even feel it, thinking you did not prick the finger at all. It has to do with whether you hit a nerve ending or not.
Do this test. Take two or three sowing needles and push then through a cork or eraser, to spread them evenly about 1 millimeter apart. Now lightly touch all the needles on your arm and count how many tiny pricks you feel, then touch again on a new place and count again. You will find that sometimes you miss a nerve ending all together and do not feel that particular needle.

That was a bit of a long answer, yes it can be painful, but you get used to it and it does not bother after a while.

Being overweight is a symptom of pcos. And it is hard to loose weight when you have pcos. Go online and order some cook books with recipies for pcos and stick to those reciepes. It will help you loose weight. I would also go to a different doctor!!! Don’t give up. Try really hard for 6 months to loose weight, walk alot and try a new diet (it is healthy for you and tastes great) I have really struggled to loose weight aswell and this has really helped me out!! Having a high GI diet can actually make pcos worse so look at some info and do your best and in 6 months you will see a huge difference!!! Good luck!

If you have diabetes you should follow a special diet. Here’s a sample diabetic meal plan that is about 1,600 calories and 220 grams of carbohydrates. Remember to drink two 8-ounce glasses of water with each meal.

Breakfast

(360 calories, 52.5 grams carbohydrate)

1 slice toasted whole wheat bread with 1 teaspoon margarine
1/4 cup egg substitute or cottage cheese

I just found out I am pregnant and I have diabetes…?

Does anyone have a good meal plan that will help bring my blood sugars in better control. They are consistently in the 200s. I’d really appreciate any advice to make this pregnancy successful!

I suggested to a girlfriend, who was having the morning nausea and restless nights to have a small snack before going to bed of one hard-boiled egg, a cracker or cookie, and some nuts, either almonds or peanuts, along with a glass of water. She did, and was a lot perkier, and less nauseous in the mornings of her first trimester.

My dad just brought home blood sugar tests from a diabetes research facility he attended for his work. I decided to take one to see how being a diabetic would be. My blood sugar ended up being 314. I have many symptoms for hyperglycemia. I am a fifteen year old girl if that makes any difference.

If you accurately took the test and if your fasting glucose level is truly 314 then it is likely that you have diabetes. If you have had other symptoms of hyperglycemia ( thirst, frequent urination, hunger and/or weigh loss) then you need to be evaluated by a physician. The most I know from this is from when I was a kid myself. type 1 is general were they have to take a shot normal at least once a day. Depends on how bad they have it and just how active they are. If hey are injured, lets say you get a splinter and it gets a little infected no big deal however , he on the other hand might swell up like a balloon. that could be a little ex stream but another would be. he could stub his toe this can cause some major pain were most rub it ans it goes away is nothing more than a memory. They must be very careful what they do and hope not to get hurt. Yes you can have kids however it might and often does skip a generation. The shows up again down the line. It is best not to eat thing that are sweat and I know that is what he ant the most of(he has you right) only kidding. They make lots of thing for those with diabetes some of taste good and some not so great. He should have a guide that he follows or his mom does. One just has to adjust, adapt and over come. His chances of going into any branch of the serviced would be NEAL. You should ask him about it, get him to talk to you let him know there is nothing to be ashamed of that you want to be a part of his life and he a part of yours.

How long does Feline Diabeties take to develop in Cats?

I had my annual blood work done for my Cat in January, which came back perfectly fine/normal. I was told at the time she needed to have her teeth cleaned/a couple removed, but the price they quoted was too expensive. I subsequently took her to a different vet two months later who ran tests at the same time as doing the teeth – results came back as very severe diabetes. I figured they must have been wrong, because I had taken her to a reliable vet 2 months earlier.

In the past few weeks I took her to yet another vet who has confirmed my cat does have diabetes.

Therefore, I want to know, how long does diabetes take to develop? Surely she could not have developed SEVERE diabetes in 2 months. I believe my original vet did one of the following:
-mixed up the test results
-used faulty testing equipment
-lied & did not conduct any tests.

Can gestational diabetes cause numbness in legs? Will this numbness go away?

I am 3 weeks postpartum and I had gestational diabetes during my pregnancy. I have to admit that during the end of the pregnancy I did not follow my diet like I should have. Well I noticed that my legs started to feel numb from my knees down to my ankles. The weird thing about the numbness, it’s only on the inside of my legs. I heard this is called peripheral neuropathy. Do I need to see a doctor? Can this be corrected? I am very concerned. What is done when a nerve conduction study is conducted?

Gestational Diabetes is no different from other forms of diabetes, except for the cause — pregnancy.

In most cases it WILL go away after you deliver. However, if you do not work to get back to your pre-pregnancy weight and form, the diabetes might stay with you.

Peripheral Neuropathy is a sign of diabetes that has been present for a long time — several months usually. This means that you may have been diabetic BEFORE you got pregnant, and that you may also remain diabetic after you deliver.

After you’ve delivered, the doctor can best advise you for continued treatment, if necessary. If you remain diabetic for more than about 90 days after delivery, the doctor should refer you to an ENDOCRINOLOGIST for treatment as a possible Type 2 Diabetic.
