No, chest pain is NOT a side effect of metformin. You definitely need to call your physician to be sure this is not symptomatic of a cardiac event or heart attack. It could also be something simple, like heartburn (if the pain is mid-sternal, mid-chest, burning sensation). However, you do not want to mess with chest pain, and need to diagnose early to avoid complications.
Call 911 if you are having severe crushing chest pain, jaw pain, and/or radiating pain to either arm. Also, call your physician immediately for follow-up.
